Luke’s Answer

Starting your own business can be exciting, but it also requires planning and effort. Here are some key tips to get you started:

Find a problem to solve or a need to fill: What are you passionate about? What gaps do you see in the market? A successful business solves a problem or offers something people want.

Validate your idea: Before investing a lot of time and money, research your target market and see if there's real demand for your product or service. Talk to potential customers, get feedback, and refine your idea.

Write a business plan: This will be your roadmap to success. It outlines your concept, target market, marketing strategy, financial projections, and how you'll operate your business.

Secure funding: You might need startup capital for equipment, inventory, or marketing. Explore options like personal savings, loans, grants, or finding investors.

Choose a business structure: This determines your legal and tax obligations. Sole proprietorship, partnership, LLC, and corporation are common options, each with its own advantages.

Register your business: Obtain any necessary licenses and permits to operate legally.

Build a strong team (optional): Depending on your business size and complexity, you might need to hire employees or contractors. Surround yourself with skilled and reliable people.

Market your business: Develop a marketing strategy to reach your target audience and create brand awareness. Utilize online and offline marketing channels effectively.

Focus on customer satisfaction: Provide excellent customer service to build a loyal customer base and encourage repeat business.

Stay adaptable: The business landscape is constantly changing. Be prepared to adapt your strategies, products, or services as needed to stay competitive.

Anthony and Luke have offered you very good advice which I won't repeat but I suggest that you round up 3 or 4 friends/family/acquaintances who have their own businesses and schedule a series of conversations to learn from their experiences. If you can speak with a seasoned business person vs. a start up, even better. Possible topics of conversation include:

why did you start your own business? what were your key motives? income? stability? being your own boss?
what are some of the challenges and obstacles you encountered?
what aspects of being in business do you like most? dislike most?
if you had to do it over, what would you do different? what would you do the same?
is life as a business person what you expected? please explain.
what impact did being in business have on your personal life?
How do you maintain a good live/work balance?

By the time you conclude your conversations/interviews you will have a broad understanding of other people's experiences and whether being in business is the right path for you. It's certainly not for everyone and a majority of start ups fail in the first two years.

Yuritza G’s Answer

Hello!! Starting your own business is an exciting journey, but it can also feel overwhelming at first. Don't worry, though – you're not alone, and there are plenty of tips to help guide you along the way. Firstly, take some time to explore your passions and interests. What do you love doing? What skills or knowledge do you possess? Your business will thrive when it's built around something you're truly passionate about.

Next, do your research. Look into the market you're interested in – who are your potential customers? What are their needs and pain points? Understanding your target audience is crucial for developing products or services that resonate with them. Additionally, study your competition. What are they doing well, and where are there gaps that you can fill?

Finally, start small and don't be afraid to take risks. You don't have to have everything figured out from the beginning. Begin with a simple business plan and take gradual steps forward. Surround yourself with a supportive network of mentors, friends, and fellow entrepreneurs who can offer guidance and encouragement along the way. Remember, every successful business started with a single idea and the courage to pursue it. So take that first step, and who knows where your entrepreneurial journey will take you!

Best of luck!!

Hello Haylee,

It's so exciting (and can be daunting) starting a business. Something that's important is to start with something you're passionate about and make a business plan. Make sure your finding all of the requirements of legally starting a business, whether it be state registration, getting a employer identification number (EIN) from the IRS, or any licensing.

It's important to research the industry you're entering and visiting any networking events to meet people who are already thriving in their industry. What do your competitors look like? What makes them successful or unsuccessful? What's the demographic you're looking to serve and what's the best way to market to them?

Utilize your resources! Whether it's someone you've There are a lot of entrepreneurship programs that can extend up to a year long where you can get matched to a Mentor. These are designated professionals that at no cost help you throughout your journey to help! These can be virtual, in person, hybrid...the world is really your Oyster! Depending on your location, there are programs like EforAll, New Girls Network, etc. Your financial institutions may also have Business Specialists that can offer their services.

Lastly - don't be afraid of failure or taking risks. Sometimes we stumble and fall back a step when trying to get things right. It's important to learn from these experiences and grow. But don't forget - sometimes the biggest risks have the biggest rewards.

Good Luck! I hope this helps. :)
