This journey might have started at some point in your life, but it's so vast that it's challenging to fully explain. If I could offer some advice, I would say, hold onto your passion. Because when we are determined to succeed, we are heading towards our goal. Keep your objectives clear in your mind, dedicate time to study, and continually hone your musical abilities. This is a wonderful question. As a composer myself I can say the best advice for making music is to make music that is in you, what make you feel good. It will take time to know yourself musically, but it will come. Study the chord progression of past hits, how did the music move people or gave them the feelings they desire. I have found that the sound of the music gives us the feelings. Make music that gives you feelings. Study how chord progressions, keys, octaves, and lyrics can impact the listener. We musicians make music for the world. The world call the music from us just like inventors and pioneers. My advice is to make what you love and refine it.

Just go for it! There's no right or wrong way to make music.

You may not have an instrument. In that case, let any/all adults around you know that you're interested. There's always someone with an old instrument tucked away somewhere in an attic. A kind neighbor loaned me a saxophone when I was in 8th grade so I could learn. If you can't find the specific instrument you want, take what there is and start learning anyway. If someone has a dusty old violin but you want to play electric guitar, learn some violin! There are so many things violin can teach you that will make you a better electric guitarist. You will never regret any learning you do.

If you can't find anything, sing! Use your voice, or try beat boxing.

Participate in musical groups at your school. Go directly to the teachers, tell them you want to participate. Often times schools will own instruments you can use if you don't have one. Or if you can't get their attention, go to your administrative office and ask to talk to a counselor and tell them you want to be in music. Whether an opportunity appears to sing in choir, to play in a jazz group, or to play clarinet in a classical group, go for it. All musical learning will be good for you. Don't be selective about what you do/don't want to learn, soak it all in :)

If you're in a situation where you have access to the instrument of your choice, and you have the financial resources, get some lessons. Start checking local classified ads, or local music stores, to see what teachers are available. Or go to the local college (if there is one) and ask the music faculty there who they would recommend as a teacher. Getting some guidance from a capable teacher will really help you to set down the best path in your music-making journey.

Good luck, and remember to take things one day at a time. Learning to make music can be hard. Just stick with it, and embrace the fact that it's difficult. You will fail many times, and that's okay! Failing is essential to learn. Show people what you have learned, perform for them. That takes courage! Find that courage within you, and stick with it.

There are numerous ways for you to kick off your journey. A great starting point could be the use of free online tools and websites that enable you to create patterns and loops. As you study and develop, let your "ear" serve as a guide for what you wish to master.

It's very important to keep an open mind about this, because inspiration is everywhere if you know where to look.

In general, snobs and know-it-alls miss out on much of what life has to offer.
