Ban’s Answer

Hi Jonah, the toughest part is stepping outside your comfort bubble. Whether you're embarking on a fresh adventure or shifting to a new career, it all boils down to taking that initial leap and leaving your comfort zone behind. Your career is going to be a long journey, regardless of your path. And given the pace at which the world is innovating, we need to keep hopping out of our comfort zones and keep learning new things.

Sean’s Answer

This is an interesting question Jonah. My suggested answer at first might seem negative but it's not, it's essential. Adversity of some kind will be ever present in any career. In my career I can break down adversity into two categories: business and interpersonal. Business adversity is a good thing. It's what keeps us motivated, thinking critically, seeking solutions, improving things. When business activities get challenging I tell myself and my team "if it were simple and easy a machine would be doing it". The interpersonal side is definitely more difficult and emotionally impactful. This is where differences in personalities, approaches, organizational structures, etc. can come into play. Since this involves the complexity of human interaction the solutions are equally complex at the tactical level. So best to approach these at the strategic level. In corporate environments it's important to always keep things professional and not take anything too personally. Try to see the other person's point of view before becoming overly critical. Be objective in analyzing both your viewpoint and those of the people you find challenging. Make sure you have a thorough and full understanding of the nature of the challenge and identify potential mutually acceptable outcomes. Or when not mutually acceptable, find ways to get others comfortable with the solution so the team/business/company/project can move ahead.
