Hi, Madison--I love Patrick's answer. Some great ideas in there.

I would start by being honest and real about what's distracting you. Is it your environment? Are you trying to study in a place with lots of people, like a coffee shop or your family's dining room? As Patrick says, find a quiet and cozy space where you won't be tempted to people watch or engage with others. If you're afraid of missing out, do what Patrick suggests and set a time limit--"I'll study for 25 minutes, and then I can take a break and see what's going on."

Are you listening to music? Maybe I'm the only one, but I find music or videos playing in the background too distracting, and they impact my retention. You might be like that, too. Try quiet, or even just white noise, and see if it helps.

And finally, the big one--are you distracted by your phone? Are you picking it up every few minutes? No help for it--you have to put it out of your sight, and turn off notifications. Set a time limit--"I can check my phone in 20 minutes."

Good luck!

Patrick’s Answer

Madison, it's essential to comprehend that people who get distracted easily or find it hard to remember things during long study periods can greatly benefit from adopting effective study methods. These methods should be customized to their learning style and attention span, which can significantly boost their focus and memory retention. One such strategy is to divide your study time into shorter, more concentrated periods, often referred to as the Pomodoro Technique. This involves studying for 25 minutes, followed by a short break. This technique can help sustain focus and ward off mental exhaustion.

Moreover, using active learning strategies such as summarizing main ideas, explaining the material to someone else, or making flashcards can help reinforce understanding and memory. Making use of visual aids like diagrams, mind maps, or color-coded notes can also assist in organizing information, making it simpler to understand.

Additionally, choosing a quiet and cozy study space, reducing distractions, and practicing mindfulness techniques like deep breathing or meditation can enhance focus and lessen cognitive overload. Trying out different study methods and figuring out what suits you best can ultimately boost your ability to concentrate, remember information, and make your study sessions more productive.
