Andy’s Answer

Skynet here ... I already have !

Seriously, I doubt it. But it will change many aspects of the lives we live today.

Anything that is physical will stay mainly the same, we're not going to see AI plumbers anytime soon. But tasks that are repetitive, tasks that require processing a lot of data will be automated fair soon.

I'd like to think AI will make many peoples lives better. Helping the old or mentally impaired spring to mind. Helping us to achieve better outcomes, helping us with mundane tasks are all good things, but i do wonder if we will find ourselves replaced in many roles....

Sreejith’s Answer

AI taking over the world isn't something we should worry about in the near future. However, change is a constant part of life, and we must remain vigilant about how this will affect our everyday routines. AI has the potential to simplify our lives, but it's essential to use it wisely. The effects of deep fakes are becoming increasingly evident, making it challenging to distinguish between what's real and what's virtual. But remember, every challenge is an opportunity for growth and innovation. Let's embrace the change, but always with a mindful approach.

Michael’s Answer

AI will continue to improve as we get better and better at programming it but I don't think AI will ever "take over the world." The reason for this is because AI still needs to be programmed by a human and can only work based on instructions given to it by a human.

Michael’s Answer

AI, akin to Skynet, dominating the world isn't something I foresee happening in the near future. However, I do anticipate AI gradually yet swiftly integrating into our daily routines, the pace of which may vary across industries. For instance, we can expect a significant increase in the use of AI in fields like entertainment, advertising, and fun apps, particularly in industries catering to the general public. This follows the universal trend of resources gravitating towards where the money flows.

AI's potential to replace numerous jobs is something I foresee, such as substituting human processing. In many aspects, this is a positive development. For example, scanners and text recognition have taken over data entry jobs. Many individuals report spending their entire day responding to emails. AI can assist in reading, summarizing, and suggesting responses in a flash, liberating employees for more fulfilling tasks. Moreover, the AI field will also generate a plethora of jobs, such as teaching AI, developing AI applications, addressing the hardware and storage requirements to handle massive processing and data volumes, and even governance and legislation.

It's crucial to acknowledge that AI, despite its proficiency, isn't flawless. It's a human creation, built on human cognition, and relies on the data the AI system utilizes. By understanding human cognition and worldview, we can identify areas where AI could be beneficial or potentially harmful.

Note - I used AI to clean-up my original response to make it more encouraging and easier to read. It took an additional 2 minutes and would have taken me at least 15 minutes to manually make it flow the same way.

Heather’s Answer

The answers above are all true. I would like to add that as a person creating technology products, AI is becoming a very helpful tool to make my job easier and take away some of the manual tasks like starting a first draft of an email. I also use it to for research, it provides a great starting point for market trends and what is happening that is relevant to my industry. In this way, AI is not taking over the world in that it is controlling all decisions, but it is becoming integrated into many aspects of jobs and it is a marketable skill to know how AI works and how to use it.

It's still important to have a good foundation of knowledge yourself, and then build off of AI. Hope this helps!

Latifa’s Answer

Not sure if it will take over the world, but it will likely be extremely influential and change a lot of what we do everyday. Similar to how the Internet changed everyone's lives. You should be very careful in choosing a career based on the advancement of AI. Many positions will no longer be needed because AI will be used instead. Look at job descriptions now to see what type of roles companies are looking for. That will give you an idea of the AI jobs that might remain relevant for years. Also, take some training classes in AI on the Internet. YouTube will have free classes.

Yamil’s Answer

The thought of artificial intelligence (AI) "taking over the world" is a popular plot in sci-fi stories, but it's key to look at this subject with a level-headed view. AI is a mighty tool with the ability to greatly influence many parts of our lives, but its growth and use are directed by human choices and goals.

Here are some thoughts to keep in mind:

1. Keeping the Reins: Humans make and manage AI systems. Rules, ethical guides, and governance structures are being created to make sure AI is used in a responsible and ethical way. It's vital for us to keep control over AI systems and make sure they match our values and aims.

2. Ethics Matter: Ethics are at the heart of creating and using AI. AI systems should be made to put safety, fairness, openness, and accountability first. Ethical AI structures aim to lessen possible risks and make sure that AI is good for everyone.

3. Teamwork in Development: Working together among researchers, policymakers, industry players, and the public is key to guiding the responsible growth of AI. Team approaches that involve experts from different fields can help tackle tough societal issues and make sure that AI is created and used in ways that match our values.

4. AI's Limits: Even with big advancements, AI systems have their limits. They work based on data and algorithms and don't have human-like awareness, feelings, and goals. AI systems are made for specific tasks and areas and may not have general intelligence or the ability to make decisions on their own outside of their programming.

5. Impact on Society: AI has the power to cause big changes in many areas, like healthcare, education, transport, and entertainment. While these improvements offer many benefits, they also bring up worries about job loss, privacy, inequality, and bias. To tackle these issues, we need to think carefully about societal effects and take steps ahead of time to lessen risks.

In short, while AI has the power to greatly influence society, the thought of AI "ruling the world" is more guesswork than a sure thing. Responsible growth, ethical thinking, governance structures, and teamwork among stakeholders are key to making sure that AI is good for society while keeping possible risks low.

Jim’s Answer

I doubt that AI will take over the world like in the movies, but it will have an impact on peoples lives, some good and some bad, just like the internet did. We need more individuals that have a deeper understanding of AI who can help guide its development as not every AI application should be encouraged or developed and that includes how much and what kind of data the application will have access to. For sure there are going to be many career opportunities in this field, and it would be a worth while investment in your time to take a look and see if its something you are interested in.

Hi Mary. As stated by others, there's a lot of hype around AI, especially right now. It is changing the way the world works and will continue to do so into the future - this may lead to a lot of jobs becoming obsolete but also to new jobs that haven't even been invented yet. As with any new technology, it has to be managed carefully to ensure that it's not abused. I doubt that the sci-fi version of 'taking over the world' but it is an area to stay current with if you're interested in any kind of technology career, even if it's not your primary area of interest.

Dawn’s Answer

Great question, Mary. I don't think that Artificial Intelligence (AI) will take over the world - now. However, there is no denying that Artificial Intelligence is changing the scope of thinking. At a basic level, AI can synthesize large quantities of data and then can respond very quickly to a question. But . . . it is the human touch, experience that really makes AI valuable in the world of work with humans.

Ronnie’s Answer

I love that question. As someone who works in AI, I often encounter this concern. While the idea of AI taking over the world is a common fear, it's important to understand the nuances. As Elon Musk mentioned, there is a non-zero probability of AI having a significant negative impact, and there's a term 'P(doom)' in AI circles to discuss this risk. However, these are theoretical concerns, and no one can predict the future with certainty.

A useful analogy is the advent of electricity. Initially, there were significant fears about its negative impacts, but its benefits have vastly outweighed those early concerns. Similarly, AI has the potential to be incredibly transformative, revolutionizing fields like drug discovery, farming, and addressing urgent challenges such as pandemics, food shortages, and global warming.

The key is responsible development and ethical use of AI. By focusing on these aspects, we can harness AI's potential for good while mitigating risks. So, while the fear of AI taking over the world is understandable, it is far from a certainty and should be balanced with the understanding of AI's immense potential benefits.

Carla’s Answer

Hi Mary,
I work with Artificial Intelligence almost daily and have the unique opportunity to teach others how to use these tools!

AI and Generative AI (Chat GPT) learn from us constantly because of all of the cool things we ask. In my opinion, I don't think it will take over the world but I do think the world has adopted it and is using it in daily life. Just like any of the technology we have access to, we need to treat these tools with respect and we should recognize that we need security guidelines in place to protect us. If we are careful when we use AI, it can be very powerful and helpful and fun. We did a demonstration recently that showed how AI can help plan out a week vacation!

AI is definitely here to stay! At one time we thought the internet was a dangerous place and look where we are now - using it to shop, play games, do research, order takeout, take classes, all kinds of things! As with anything, there is a dark side, but if we come together and make efforts to control it, it can be great.
