Joanne’s Answer
So- it is a big question and an amazing undertaking.
There are many ways to publish, from self-publishing- you pay the fees and recoup with sales, to acquiring an agent to represents you and your bid for the bet buyer/publisher and, as you might imagine, many variations in between.
The idea of putting something out there - publishing, is an ancient and honored profession.
And, with social media- it is so much simpler to get yourself out there.
So, I will focus on the why in this answer:
Do you want people to read your work without cost, fees, book binding, etc? Set up a website and put your work out there. You could ask for donations, ask people to share your work with your name on it, there are so many options.
Remember, when you create something and put your name on it, it is yours- no need to formally copyright unless you choose to- it is not expensive.
So- think about your why and how - and do what is best for you at this stage of your career, and for the type of work you are creating.

How to Publish a Novel or Short Story at the Age of 14
Publishing a novel or short story at the age of 14 is an impressive goal and entirely achievable with the right guidance and approach. Here are some steps you can take to pursue your dream of becoming a published author:
1. Finish Your Manuscript: Before you can publish your work, you need to ensure that your novel or short story is complete. Take your time to revise and edit your writing to make it the best it can be.
2. Research Publishing Options: There are several avenues you can explore to publish your work:
Traditional Publishing: Research publishers that accept submissions from young authors. Some publishers have specific imprints for young writers.
Self-Publishing: Consider self-publishing platforms like Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing or IngramSpark, which allow authors to publish their work independently.
3. Seek Feedback: It’s essential to get feedback on your manuscript before submitting it for publication. You can join writing groups, seek advice from teachers or mentors, or even hire a professional editor to help polish your work.
4. Prepare Your Submission: If you choose traditional publishing, follow submission guidelines carefully. Write a compelling query letter and synopsis to accompany your manuscript.
5. Understand the Publishing Process: Educate yourself about the publishing industry, including contracts, royalties, and marketing strategies. It’s crucial to have a good understanding of how the process works.
6. Stay Persistent and Positive: Rejection is a common part of the publishing journey. Stay persistent, keep honing your craft, and don’t let setbacks discourage you.
7. Consider Writing Contests and Literary Magazines: Submitting your work to writing contests or literary magazines can provide exposure and recognition for your writing.
8. Build Your Author Platform: Consider creating an author website or social media presence to connect with readers and showcase your work.
9. Consult with Legal Guardians: Since you are a minor, involve your parents or legal guardians in any publishing decisions you make to ensure everything is done legally and ethically.
