Hello, Jaseenah !
The most important thing that you can do as a fashion designer is to be uniquely original ! And have an enormous amount of patience, too.
Each step as a fashion designer should be handled precisely and there are so many facets to learn about and put into action. There is not so much "main things" rather your entire career as a fashion designer is made up of so many things which are brought together to make it work. Fashion School teaches students about all aspects of the industry and how to make it happen.
After completing Fashion School, you will have gained contacts that you can collaborate with and start opportunities with. It is a very time consuming career, blending solitary work as in sewing garments with high powered socialization such as fashion shows, pitching to have your line in stores and shops and parties to meet industry people and have them get to know you.
You are pretty far away from the New York City fashion world and you can choose how you want to do your career. You can pursue it in your town or consider relocating to New York City which is now very unusually expensive, so maybe you might decide to stay in your current town. Learn about the best way to advertise and let it be known that you are a fashion designer. I am not sure how to advise this career in a small town. Your best bet would be to open your own shop in your area and advertise to make sure everyone knows you and your services. Visit the closest Chamber of Commerce or Town Hall and speak with staff about your plans and services.
I hope that this was a help and I wish you all the best ! Enjoy your fashion career every step of the way !
