Hi Joshua,
Self-publishing a book can be an exciting and rewarding process. Here are the typical steps to self-publish a book:
1. Manuscript Preparation: Ensure that your manuscript is complete, thoroughly edited, and properly formatted. You may consider hiring a professional editor to polish your work.
2. Cover Design and Formatting: Create an eye-catching cover design for your book and format the interior layout using software or professional services that specialize in book design.
3. Choose a Self-Publishing Platform: Utilize platforms such as Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP), Apple iBooks, Barnes & Noble Press, or IngramSpark, which offer tools and resources for self-publishing authors.
4. ISBN and Copyright: Obtain an International Standard Book Number (ISBN) for your book and secure copyright registration to protect your work.
5. Publishing and Distribution: Upload your book files, set the price, and choose the distribution channels where you want your book to be available. Many self-publishing platforms offer both digital and print-on-demand distribution options.
6. Marketing and Promotion: Develop a marketing plan to promote your book. Utilize social media, author websites, book signings, and other promotional strategies to increase visibility and attract readers.
7. Research Self-Publishing Resources: Research and utilize resources such as self-publishing guides, forums, and online communities to gain insights into the self-publishing process and industry best practices.
It's recommended to thoroughly research each step and familiarize yourself with the self-publishing process before proceeding. Additionally, many self-publishing platforms offer comprehensive guides and support to help authors navigate the process. Remember that self-publishing requires a hands-on approach, from manuscript preparation to marketing and distribution. While it may be a challenging process, the potential for creative control and direct access to readers can make self-publishing a fulfilling experience.
Best of Luck!

First, get your manuscript in the best shape possible. Editing is crucial, so either do it yourself meticulously or hire a professional. Once your manuscript is ready, you’ll need a good cover design. It’s worth investing in a designer because people do judge books by their covers.
Next, choose a self-publishing platform. Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) is a popular choice because it’s straightforward and has a wide reach. You’ll need to format your manuscript according to their guidelines, which can be a bit tricky but there are lots of resources and templates available online to help with that.
After uploading your book, set your pricing and distribution preferences. Don’t forget to write a compelling book description; it’s your sales pitch to potential readers.
For marketing, leverage social media and maybe consider running some ads. Word of mouth and reviews are super powerful, so encourage early readers to leave reviews.
When I was figuring this all out, I found a lot of help through Authors Breeze, where I currently work. They offer services for editing, cover design, and marketing, which can really take a lot of the load off your shoulders.
Good luck with your book! It’s a journey, but seeing your work out there is totally worth it.
Cheers!

Hello! Thank you for your question.
To self-publish, I would use Amazon KDP - Kindle Direct Publishing.
I use KDP for my publishing needs. They're free to use and provide support for your novel.
You need only an Amazon account. Once you have that setup, you can connect with Amazon KDP.
Other sites to check out - are Barnes and Noble, Google Play, and Apple Books.
You can also publish excerpts of your novel on Wattpad or Medium - also for free. Substack, too.
If you have a website, you can post your novel there. You can also set up a newsletter and share parts of your book.
Good luck!

Start your journey with Canva, a fantastic platform for creating your own e-book. It allows you to personalize the theme with your unique pictures and text. Afterward, you have the option to save it for printing or share it directly online. Additionally, don't forget to explore Google for more options. There's a world of possibilities out there, so dig in and find the ones that align with your goals. You can also add a Creative Commons license. https://creativecommons.org/share-your-work/cclicenses/
Get the text together for copy/paste into a Canva e-book template
Prepare images and any additional files for the Canva publication
Double check the file for any errors
Test the file for print quality and/or make sure a .pdf or similar file opens with no errors
Share the file as you see fit, distributing it through another outlet such as Etsy

Hello, Joshua !
I am so happy that you are interested in writing a book for publishing. You have an advantage being in New York City where the main publishers are, but self-publishing is very much a good idea. If you want to self-publish a hard copy book that people can hold in their hand, you can consider Print On Demand companies that will expedite your book. You can try Kindle Direct Publishing, Ingram Spark, Blurb, The Book Patch (link below) and Book Baby. Do not hesitate to also submit your manuscript to the big publishers in your town such as Penguin Random House, Hachette Book Group, Scholastic Corporation (if it is a children's book), Seven Stories Press, Soho Press, Manhattan Book Group, Beacon Publishing Group. Keep submitting to the self-publishing companies as well as the well-known publishers because you never know. At least you do know that you can self-publish to start out.
Once you have your book in hand and have placed an order with the self-publisher, then you can look into it becoming an e-book. This will take a lot of research regarding the price for Self-Publisher Print On Demand Companies and also what the e-book companies charge. You will also learn about the services that the publishers provide to market your book. I have read many hard copy self-published books. Of all the ones I have read, one was printed without being edited and it made a very bad impression. It was printed with misspelled words, typos, incorrect grammar and punctuation errors, but the author was determined to get a book done. I assumed that he did not want to pay for editing services and that is why you should decide if you can edit your manuscript yourself or want to pay for it to be edited. I have to say, as poorly as that book was presented, it sure was an excellent story and that's why I read it plus I knew the authors' mother.
Even writers need to network with people in the industry. I advise connecting with the New York Writers Coalition which would be great for you to interact with as a writer and gain resources. As you proceed forward and when you are ready, you may want to consider obtaining a Literary Agent. I have left the link below for the Directory of Literary Agents. You can also join and participate in events with the New York Writers Workshop for which I have left a link for you below. It is a non-profit that gives workshops and holds events for writers.
The really wonderful thing about being a writer today is that you can both publish electronically as well as in print. Gather all the information and decide what you want to begin with. Being a writer is one of the most fulfilling and exciting careers and I wish you all the best !
