I want to take history in university but I have no idea what I can do after that. What are the career options with a history degree?

Emily’s Answer

Friend of mine has a history degree, and he writes books, runs a museum and gets to write what goes on those little Historical Marker plaques that you see on the roadside.

Hi TL,

I love your question!

You are living in one of the most exciting times in history and that fact that you want to study history is fabulous. Here are some links to careers in history: https://www.historians.org/jobs-and-professional.../career.../careers-for-history-majors and https://collegegrad.com/careers/historians

But here's the thing:

Technology is going to have a great impact on how we communicate and experience history. (repeat this five times and let it sink in)

Many people think history is something that you find in dusty books, but that is not true at all. History is all around us. Historians today are leveraging cutting edge digital technologies to research, curate, and fascinate the public. I have included some great examples below of how you can fuse your love of history and the messages of the past with some very cutting edge research and presentation methods. The fact that you can be anywhere in the world and access the Vatican Library or the Smithsonian is very exciting!!!

I would challenge you to take/audit technology courses as well as history courses to become a cutting edge historian in the digital age. You should consider volunteering to help a museum/library/university/organization digitize their collection or use social media or virtual reality to create a unique historical experience.

Verizon is actually working in virtual reality, and I have included two articles that will spark your curiosity. These articles show how virtual reality will become a key tool in your historian's toolkit. Bryn Mooser is using VR to help us virtually experience stories, news, and film. Augmented reality is also discussed in the article. Dream big and I can't wait to see your work!

Victoria recommends the following next steps:

Visit the sites above. Search for sites that match your interest. Read as much as you can about emerging technologies and determine how you can apply these to your major, your profession, and grad school projects.
Work on a project/projects that fuses technology and history. Start small and be successful. Find mentors/teachers/peers who are working in this field and have the same vision. Inspire others.
