AP Bio junior or senior year?

I'm a sophomore going into junior year and I'm planning to take AP Bio since I might go into the medical field. One of my teachers said that if I take AP Bio junior year I'll start to forget it by the time I take pre-med classes in college. Also whichever year I don't take AP Bio I'll take AP Lang.

Thank you comment icon Hi George, great question! I think your teacher is very wise. Personally, I took AP Bio my sophomore year and while it worked out because pre-AP Bio concepts were still fresh in my mind, I'm now a 12th grader with a very limited knowledge of biology. I think it would be especially beneficial for you to take AP Bio your senior year since you want to go into the medical field. However, if you do take it in the 12th grade, make sure you don't let senioritis get the best of you. Also, taking AP Lang your 11th grade year will help you build the writing skills you'll need for the SAT and for future college essays you'll be writing. I hope this helps and I wish you the best! Thank you comment icon Dear George, I think that your teacher is wise as well, but it is also up to you to decide what is best for you because you know yourself better. I think that if you take it during your senior year you might get distracted because of everything that is going on. But, like your teacher said it might be best to take it when you are about to get into college so that you do not forget it. I know that it is hard to study for courses that you haven't taken in awhile for the MCAT. You could also work as a tutor to keep it fresh in your mind. Good luck! Christi

I agree that it would be good to have AP Language before writing your college application essays, however, I do have one plug for taking AP Bio as a junior. Check and see if any of the colleges you plan on applying to require that you take an SAT Science Subject test. To do well on this test, you will probably need to have finished an AP science class (Biology, Chemistry, or Physics E&M and Mechanics). If you don't take this course as a junior, you may not be able to perform as highly on the exam. However, if no colleges you're interested in require the SAT Science subject test, I'd recommend AP Lang as a junior and AP Bio as a senior.

I suggest taking Bio as soon as possible because then in classes later on you will understand references to biology. Also, I would take it with some other easier classes because Bio requires a lot of studying. Use index cards and quiz yourself repeatedly throughout the course, this will help you build a stronger memory trace, the retrieval practice. Good luck!

I don't think it matters that much. As a generalization I think people do better on the ACT test if they have had more AP sciences. It's kind of nice to get some of the AP classes out of the way your junior year, so you can relax a little bit your senior year. Good luck!

Hi, George,

As a former biology major, I agree with your teacher. AP biology has a lots of facts to memorize about biochemistry and parts of cells, etc. It may be better to take it closer to studying other college level biology courses. AP English Language and Composition will help you be a better writer and could help you prepare for your college application essays, which will need to be done in the summer and fall of your senior year. Therefore I would take that class first.

It won't matter. You will be relearning the necessary information when you get to college biology. You can do it either year depending on what is most convenient for the rest of your schedule
