What made you want to become a nurse?

I am barely starting my CMA in less than a month, there are times when I become doubtful so it would be nice to learn how people overcame those thoughts and became nurses.

Thank you comment icon There are numerous paths to explore if you're interested in nursing careers. Sometimes, these jobs can be tough and you might question how you'll make it through your shift. Remember, no job is a walk in the park and healthcare is becoming increasingly complex. So, make sure you've thoroughly researched every facet of the job before it becomes too challenging or even impossible to shift your focus. Nancie Attwater

Bailey’s Answer

I was drawn to nursing because I wanted to help people. I was inspired by a nurse practitioner. She encouraged me to become a nurse but no one else told me that there are other helpful jobs in the hospital. You will get burnt out as a nurse as well. We see a lot of new grads hate their job within the first year. It is good that you are a CNA and you see the real side of nursing. Here is a list of jobs that you could consider:
- registered nurse
-nurse practitioner
- physician assistant
- Radiology tech = X-ray tech, MRI tech, CT tech , cath lab tech
- nuclear medicine tech
- ultrasound tech
- echocardiogram tech
- physical therapist
- occupational therapist
- physician
- human resource in hospital
-medical biller /billing department
- pharmacist
-pharmacy tech
- bio-medical engineer (they are responsible for medical equipment and fix any issues)
- IT department for electronic medical record - CERNER/EPIC.
-lab= phlebotomist, microbiology, hematology, blood bank…
- management in any department
- dietician
- administrative /operator
- business administrator/ CEO

Hailey’s Answer

Being a nurse is something I always wanted to do. I never really gave any other thoughts to other career paths until much later. A few times I’ve considered other careers now, mostly when I’m burnt out.

The previous answer offered many great options related to the nursing field but I thought I would share one that was missed-nurse anesthesia. I am a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthesiologist and love my job! I have a bachelors in nursing and a masters in anesthesia. I started with a two associates nursing degree and just kept working my way through school while working in the field. I have worked in Infectious disease, oncology, med surg, cardiovascular icu and now anesthesia. The nursing field is great because you can do a variety of care area and you are always learning.

Getting burnt out is definitely a potential problem in any job but is particularly common in healthcare. Even if you love your job (like I do) you can get burnt out. I make a point of having self care days and activities to help myself.

Good luck and best wishes going forward!
