Hello, Dominic !
Being a Diesel Mechanic is one of the many careers in which one will never stop learning. If you want to know how long the program at your school would be you would need to call the school or go to their website to see the duration of the program. Typically, in your state, it will take anywhere from 6 months to 2 years to do. It will depend on the school and the program so if you want to choose a short or long term training for this, it is time to explore various possible schools to attend.
Certification Diesel Mechanic programs usually take 6 to 9 months to complete and diploma programs take 1 to 2 years. If you go for an Associates Degree, it would take 2 years. But learning doesn't stop after program completion. You will always be learning new things and learning from experience, too. So you have a choice of the type of program duration that will prepare you for this career. These are the durations of time for the programs in your state of California.
It is fine to take your time with this type of career. I advise taking the longer education options so that you can get more experience as you learn. The longer you are in your program, the more people you will meet and contacts in the field may open some doors for opportunities for you. Your teachers can keep you updated about the latest information about the industry and job market. If you rush through it, you may miss out on possible valuable contacts and connections that will boost your future career.
Do not hesitate to speak with your Job Corps faculty and staff because they know you and would probably be able to suggest which type of program would be best for you, taking into consideration the job market for this career in the San Jose area. I would also suggest reading employment notices on Indeed (and other employment sites) for diesel mechanics and see what the job duties are and the education qualifications. This will give you insight as to which educational and training experience may be best for you.
I hope that this is helpful and I wish you all the best as you proceed with your education and training !
