Kelly’s Answer
Skills that are beneficial for being a dietitian are good critical thinking skills, especially for working in a hospital which may be faster paced. Being able to problem solve and prioritize patients you’ll see first. More critical patients (e.g. malnutrition, TPN or enteral feed patients..) will need more attention than non-critical patients. Also being a good listener, being empathetic, ability to develop good rapport with patients. They are more likely to be open to education when you have a good rapport with them.

Jared,
I must agree with Kelly, especially with the empathy. People who are needing to see a dietician are usually in a "bad way:" sick, maybe some mental issues, and often hospitalized. A lot of times the patients have brought on the need for a dietician by either ignoring a doctor's advice or by being rather self-destructive (think of a diabetic eating cake when their sugars are high). Listening to the needs and to the whys will go far in helping the patient. Good luck!

Hey Jared,
Being a good dietician comes with different skills you can learn. I think being verses in psychology courses can help you understand working with people who have different disorders that you may deal with. Learning how to communicate with different types of individuals is important as you will deal with many different patients who may feel vulnerable as well collaborating with your medical team to provide the best patient care. Advocating is also very important as some patients need extra help with advocating for needs as you get to them.
