Are there any volunteer opportunities for high school students (Northern Virginia area) under the age of 16, in hospitals, health centers, or physical therapy/sports med offices?

I have seen multiple volunteer opportunities in INOVA, but they are 16+. The only under 16 one I have seen is in Sentara but it is a little far. I am looking for opportunities in the Fairfax area, but maybe as far as Reston.

Have you considered exploring the gift shops? I've had the pleasure of encountering high school students lending a hand at Inova and VHC. They seemed a bit older, though. It's possible that those under 16 might find the hospital environment a bit mature for them. However, don't let this deter you! For opportunities in nursing homes, why not give them a call and ask to speak with the activities coordinator? I'm confident they would appreciate some personal interaction with residents, or even some cheerful singing. Don't forget about fire stations too - they could be another great avenue to explore! Just call the reception desk and ask.

Hi Sophia,
My advice to you would be to call the volunteer department directly. There are different reasons why they might have a limitation of 16+ but if you talk to someone they might be able to put you somewhere. As far as applications go, the volunteering is what’s important more than where you volunteered. You will see interesting things no matter what the title is

Hi Sophia! I found several places to volunteer near my area. I live in Illinois, btw. You can use the website Volunteer Match, which gives you options of what type of settings you want to volunteer. I think there's also an option for an age limit. Give it a try, and I hope this helps!

Hey Sophia,

I would advice if you did see any volunteer opportunities you found interest in to call them and see what networking connections they may have as to how you can find opportunities for 16 years of age and above. I am not sure if you are religious, but I do know local churches offer youth groups with many ways to volunteer in local communities.
