How do you keep yourself on a continous learning path ?

What helps you with not reaching a point of thinking you know everything? I find myself getting to a point of knowledge where I feel I don't need to obtain anymore; what helps with understanding there's a never-ending loop of learning?

Great question and one you are wise to pursue. We can never reach the endpoint of learning, especially in the Healthcare field. There may be times when the routine of your work makes it seem that you ' know everything you need to know', but I can assure that is not true. After 40 plus years in laboratory science, it was hard to keep up with the changes. That is true of Healthcare overall. For most licenses to remain valid, a specific amount of continuous education will be required. Some of it will be specified and some will be your choice. There is a never- ending supply of online courses, articles and activities. If you reach that point where you think you know it all, take a step back and consider if it might be time to branch out in a new direction within your chosen field, or possibly consider a different direction. But by all means, don't fall into the trap of thinking you have no more to learn. That is a dangerous attitude. Best to you!

Rowan’s Answer

Hi!
A mentality to keep: always be open to learning something new everyday. Even as a full time nurse and professional, you can’t know everything, so be open to learning as much as possible. I have been a nurse for years and I am happy to report that I still learn something new everyday.

Also the following are helpful:
- always ask questions
- join specialty or career focused associations such as ENA or AACN, etc
- subscribe to nursing or medical journals to keep up to date on practices and research
- pursue certifications and trainings
- masters degrees or masters certificates
- volunteering
- seeking mentorship from coworkers or superiors (nurses or not) with great experience and insight

Anna’s Answer

Hey Leah,

I think this is a great question to ask yourself as well as time on how to reflect. I think limiting ourselves to not wanting to learn is what keeps me motivated to keep trying. Learning helps us grow not only in knowledge but also skills and continued passion. I think wanting to learn more helps keep our mind young and allows you to feel fulfilled. Being able to share that new knowledge with others around you is a great way to meet new people and teach people who may well versed and educated in your field. I think striving for growth is important so keep trying!

Hi Leah!

I think this is a great question to ask. I feel as if my answer is pretty simple: stay curious. Wonder not only how things work, but why they work the way that they do. Ask questions you feel as if you may even know the answer to, since you might still learn more information. My favorite thing to ask about is other people's experiences, and while they may feel like subjective answers, you may actually be exposed to some objective truths! Learning is beyond just learning about facts, though those are important as well. Though there may not be an exact need to keep learning, learning and teaching is a loop of communication that is constantly evolving. Staying within that loop only deepens our understanding of our subject and each other. And of course, try to make learning fun when you can! Dig deeper into a topic you know nothing about, or ask a friend about something they're experienced in that you may not be. You got this!

Christopher’s Answer

Leah, staying on a continuous learning path requires a blend of curiosity, humility, and goal-setting. Always be curious and ask questions, set clear learning goals, and stay open-minded about the endless possibilities of knowledge. Seeking feedback and engaging with learning communities can provide fresh perspectives and keep your journey dynamic. Reflecting on your learning and staying humble, recognizing that there's always more to discover, will help you avoid complacency and embrace the never-ending loop of learning. It's all about nurturing a mindset that values growth and understands that the pursuit of knowledge is a lifelong adventure.

Éverton’s Answer

Hello Leah Lyric! Embrace the fact that we can't know everything - that's the first step. The moment we believe we've reached the pinnacle of knowledge, we've taken a wrong turn. Sure, a person can be incredibly smart, but can they know everything? No, it's simply not possible as there's always something new to discover. The essence of knowledge lies in continuously learning something new every day, every week, and every year... this ensures your life will never be dull. A great way to expand your knowledge is to set a goal based on something you enjoy and aim for it. Give it your all! Stay on the right track!
