Hello Charles,
It's great that you're considering becoming a CPA in Minnesota, a fantastic choice whether you're interested in accountancy or exploring other opportunities. The journey involves completing 150 hours of study, and since you've already earned your Associate in Arts degree, you'll just need a few extra credits.
One of the most budget-friendly places to earn these credits is Metropolitan State University. They offer affordable tuition fees and flexible online courses, making it convenient for you to study at your own pace.
Alternatively, you might consider Normandale Community College if you're looking for fewer credits. Both institutions boast excellent programs that will help you meet the CPA requirements by 2028.
Keep up the good work, Charles! I'm confident you'll make a fantastic CPA.

Becoming a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) requires meeting specific educational requirements, including earning additional credits beyond an Associate's degree. In Minnesota, you need 150 semester credits, including specific coursework in accounting and business, to qualify for CPA licensure. If you already have an Associate in Arts (AA), you can complete the necessary credits at a relatively affordable institution.
Here are a few strategies and options for completing the required credits in Minnesota at a lower cost:
Community Colleges: Continuing at a community college can be a cost-effective way to earn additional credits. Many community colleges have articulation agreements with four-year universities, allowing for a smooth transfer of credits.
Normandale Community College: Offers affordable tuition and has transfer agreements with several four-year institutions.
Anoka-Ramsey Community College: Another affordable option with pathways to four-year colleges.
State Universities: Minnesota State Universities offer relatively low tuition rates and have programs specifically designed to meet CPA requirements.
Metropolitan State University: Offers a Bachelor of Science in Accounting and affordable tuition. They also provide flexibility for working adults.
Minnesota State University, Mankato: Offers a comprehensive accounting program and in-state tuition rates.
Online Programs: Online programs can be a cost-effective and flexible way to earn additional credits. Many accredited institutions offer online courses that are recognized by the Minnesota Board of Accountancy.
Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU): Offers an online Bachelor's in Accounting at a relatively low cost.
Western Governors University (WGU): Offers a competency-based learning model that can save you time and money.
Credit Transfer and Prior Learning Assessment: Look for institutions that accept transfer credits and offer credit for prior learning, which can reduce the number of courses you need to take.
Financial Aid and Scholarships: Apply for financial aid and scholarships to reduce costs further. Many schools offer specific scholarships for accounting students.
Steps to Take:
Research and Compare Costs: Look at the tuition and fees for each of the institutions mentioned and compare them.
Meet with an Academic Advisor: Discuss your educational goals with an advisor to ensure you are taking the right courses to meet CPA requirements.
Plan Your Coursework: Make sure to include the required accounting and business courses. Minnesota requires at least 24 semester hours in accounting at the undergraduate or graduate level.
Specific Considerations for Minnesota:
To be certified as a CPA in Minnesota, ensure that your educational path includes:
At least 24 semester hours in accounting subjects such as financial accounting, auditing, taxation, and management accounting.
At least 24 semester hours in business-related courses such as business law, economics, and finance.
By strategically choosing affordable institutions and planning your coursework, you can complete the necessary credits to become a CPA in Minnesota without incurring excessive costs.

I had a positive experience with WGU - highly recommend especially if you're already working full-time.

Hello Chris,
I believe the most effective strategy moving forward would be to thoroughly examine Minnesota's specific requirements to understand what you need to do to acquire your license. Each state has its own unique criteria, but it's a certainty that you'll need to undertake some accounting courses, along with fundamental classes such as audit and tax. If you complete the compulsory classes required to qualify for the exam, you'll always have the opportunity to take the exams, achieve the necessary scores, and then complete the remaining credit hours to officially receive your license.
I hope this guidance is beneficial to you!

I don't know about in-person programs in Minnesota, but also look at online degree programs. There are many out there now that do not require you to be in-person. Do your due diligence to make sure any program you consider has a good track record for job placement, CPA passing rates, etc.
I look forward to having you as a fellow CPA in a few years!
