Doc’s Answer

Mary there is something in all of us that makes us capable of achieving great things. Something that drives progress and motivates us through difficult times. It keeps us in balance in every aspect of our lives. Not everyone believes they have it, the truth is, they simply haven’t discovered it yet. If you have the right mindset; believing that you can get better at something and allow your interests to develop over your lifetime. Then, it is possible to get passionate about something. Create your life by living it. You can not expect to find your passion, put yourself out there and passion will find you. Sounds easy, though, with the uncertainty in employment, fear can be more of a motivator to stay in one job than taking the risk towards making positive changes. It doesn’t matter if you have never done the job before or if you’re not very good at it, as long as you’re interested in it, passion will find you.

Realizing your passion in what you do means everything else in your career and life will fall into place. What you do will become important enough to take risks, failures become lessons and challenges become opportunities. Adaptability, innovation and creativity will become a by-product of the motivation to succeed. Passion is the energy to keep going when all has gone pear-shaped when money has run dry and your physical energy is missing in action. It is even capable of fuelling the business in turbulent times, as well as earning trust from employees and customers. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. The only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it.

Doc recommends the following next steps:

DEFINE YOUR GOALS: The first step towards achieving success is to define your goals. You need to know what you want in life and what you need to do to get it. Write down your goals and make them specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound. This will help you stay focused and motivated.
CREATE A PLAN: Once you have defined your goals, you need to create a plan to achieve them. Break down your goals into smaller, manageable steps, and create a timeline for each step. This will help you stay on track and monitor your progress.
STAY FOCUSED: One of the biggest obstacles to achieving success is distractions. You need to stay focused on your goals and avoid distractions. This means eliminating any unnecessary activities or tasks that do not contribute to your goals.
WORK HARD: To achieve success, you need to work hard and smart. This means putting in the effort and time required to achieve your goals, but also using your time and resources effectively. This includes delegating tasks, using technology to automate tasks, and prioritizing your work.
STAY MOTIVATED: Finally, staying motivated is essential to achieving success. You need to keep reminding yourself of your goals and why you want to achieve them. Celebrate your successes along the way and use them as motivation to keep going.

Rebecca’s Answer

Thank you for your question! This is a good question. Firstly, how do you define success? Different people have different definitions, eg money, reputation, wrong life balance, happiness, etc. The most important is to find out the career you have interest.
Below are my suggestions:
1. Think about what you have interest, eg your hobbies, favourite subjects, etc and identify the related careers
Eg if you like music, would you like to be a musician singer, musical artist, music composer, music producer, etc
If you have interest in maths, would you like to be an accountant, engineer, banker, financial analyst, maths teacher, etc
2. Find out more on these careers and determine what you have interest
3. Speak to someone who are working in these careers. Seek guidance from your mentor, school career counselor, your parents, etc
4. Shortlist 1-2 careers you would like to pursue
5. Explore the entry criteria of relevant subjects in colleges
6. Upon graduation, establish a long term career plan with short term milestones. Review the plan regularly and adjust if necessary.
Hope this helps! Good Luck!
May Almighty God bless you!

Hi Mary -

Yes, hard work does indeed lead to success, but it's not the only component to success.

From my experience, these are some other general qualities that will help drive success.

1. Work with Integrity! Always work with the highest level of honesty, trust and be straightforward.
2. Be Reliable! Show up and deliver on your promises. Do the things that you say will do.
3. Be Curious! Understand what you do. Don't be afraid to dig in, question things, ask why! Learn every step of the way.
4. Be Adaptive! Things are always changing. Be ready for it, expect it, change is inevitable. Take change as an opportunity for something new.
5. Be Open-minded! Perspective means there are many ways to look at the same thing. Be willing to accept differing opinions, it is not always simple as wrong or right.
6. Network, Network! Build and continue building strong relationships at all levels. Surround yourself with good people, whom you can support in some way and that support you. Have mentors, be a mentee.
7. Create a Self-Brand! Make yourself known for the attributes that you want highlighted, whether your character, your skills or your talents. Spend time identifying what you want to be known for, emulate those things and introduce yourself at every chance with that!

Hope this helps!
