As a student, I was wondering what things have you learned from your time in the medical field, or as a medical assistant. The medical field is one that I am interested in entering.

Hello Kai,
Some of the biggest things I have learned is
1. Compassion and people skills is a more valued than actual medical terminology, knowledge when it comes to providing direct patient care.

2. Experience is the best teacher, Try to volunteer/work with as many different patient populations as possible. I got my start in the medical field by volunteering with the American Red cross & local hospitals.

3. Don't flinch, it's all about staying calm under pressure especially in stressful environments like memory care units, emergency rooms etc

4.Lastly, you are in the medical field because you genuinely care for others not just the pay.

Isabel’s Answer

Hey there, Kai!

In my journey through the medical field, I've come to realize just how vital empathy, open communication, and teamwork truly are. To provide the best care for our patients, we need more than just medical knowledge - we also need a compassionate heart that listens and responds to their needs. Sure, understanding all the medical jargon and procedures is pretty important, but so is keeping cool under pressure and staying organized.

Being able to roll with the punches and work well with a team of different professionals is a major part of getting the best results for our patients. And of course, keeping it professional and always learning, whether through education or hands-on practice, is key to delivering top-notch care and making sure our patients are safe in the ever-changing world of healthcare.

Hwal’s Answer

Kai,

I'm not sure what type of career in medicine or health care you are interested in or will pursue, but my experience has laid bare the challenges of today's medical practice. The more I navigate the challenges though, the more I realise that I ultimately chose the right path and it inspires me to envision how I can challenge to boundaries of medicine to maximise its life-changing potential.

Let me know if you have any specific questions I can help with.

Wendy’s Answer

I would suggest looking into areas that are in high need in your location. I know in our area (central NC), finding general family practice locations that are currently accepting new patients are few and far between if you need to be seen in the next 1-3 months (!!!!!).

Other than that, I've really seen patients thrive when they finally connect with a functional medicine provider and since this is still a growing area, I think there's a real need in a lot of areas in the US. To do well in functional medicine, you have to be open to outside-the-box ideas. Good luck!

Anna’s Answer

Hey Kai,

Some of the biggest things I have learned in the medical field is:

Communication is huge on both a patient level as well as the team you work with. Collaboration is key when working in the medical field, learning how to work well with not only your team but others who may be on your unit is important. Understanding will be crucial as you will deal with vulnerable people depending on the area but also working with others. Experience and time will help you learn to grow more comfortable in situations as well.
