What kind of career should I pursue with my different interests?

I am a junior in high school and am struggling to come up with a career path and major for college. I love interacting with, helping, and learning about people, traveling, reading/ writing, and singing. I also have a lot of interest in studying Spanish and some interest in areas like criminal justice, psychology, sociology, and public relations. One of my biggest problems is balancing out what I like to do with how practical a job choice is. I know I'm all over the board with this, but I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for possible careers I could pursue? #career #english #travel #social #spanish #interest

Since you have multiple interests, what about starting with your school guidance counselor or psychologist? Ask them how they like their jobs (you said you have an interest in psychology), and see what other resources they can offer. I have a friend who is a school psychologist and one of the things she enjoys is helping students find their path. Go to job fairs and talk to people actually doing job in areas of interest to see what they love/don't love about what they do. Make a pros/cons list about each of the things you are interested in. I know it sounds basic, but it's actually helpful to start to gauge which items are most interesting or important to you. No matter what direction you head, getting a solid education and developing excellent writing, analytical and communication skills will serve you. Good luck and and enjoy the journey!

Molly, I've been in the same boat as far as having multiple interests and difficulty deciding. I would definitely recommend that no matter what path you choose, to continue with any Spanish learning you are doing. Criminal Justice, psychology, and sociology are rather closely linked and all can even include Spanish. If you have the means to do so, perhaps doing some volunteer/internship social work may show you what you enjoy or open doors. If you'd like to incorporate your language learning into that as well you could do social work in a Spanish community in or out of the states.

Hey There,

I have a couple of friends from the US who are working as teachers and volunteers in foreign countries.

Basically what they do, is register in a non-profit organization for few years, they travel the world ( especially third world countries) and get to meet people, know about their lives, interact with the culture, learn as much as they can about it and give back to the community by sharing their knowledge and making an impact in people's lives. Not only by teaching English, but also by providing different services ( collecting money, books, goods...etc). They get to make tons of friends along the way and build one of a kind experiences that strengthen their knowledge and their skills.

So my friends did that for a while before going back to their country with a clear idea about what they want to do with their lives - Stronger than ever.

I hope this helps a bit.

Cheers Molly,

Rachel’s Answer

There are very few careers that would not be enhanced by your knowledge of a foreign language. Business, law, and medicine all make use of the Spanish language frequently. If you know this language, you will have an advantage and job opportunities that others in your field may not.

Mia’s Answer

Hi Molly
It is wonderful that you have so many interests. In addition to what Lyn said I would also suggest that you volunteer in some of the fields you are passion about. Also think about a few things that you would love to do whether you were paid for it or not; it will really help to narrow down some of your passions.

I hope this helps!
