Hi Alan,
Math is needed to solve the below types of problems.
1. Traditional problems like calculating how to distribute money equally, how much paint to buy to paint a wall, etc.
2. More recent problems like how to calculate the time it takes to travel to moon, if an asteroid will hit Earth.
3. When making cars, houses, washing machines, etc., you will use a lot of math.

To improve your writing, you can start by focusing on spelling and grammar when writing to your friends (usually texting on phone). You can improve a lot more by taking a Composition class and paying attention to suggestions the teacher provides on how to improve your writing. Good writing is about reading your own writing (e.g. a story, an essay) and rewriting it few times until you are satisfied that you and others will understand it easily.

Good luck!

Aaron’s Answer

For the first half of my life I was deficient in both math and writing. When I started my career in the arts I became proficient in both. With math I learned the hard way that understanding fractions was key to accurate framing. Additionally, being able to do percentages allowed me to quickly figure out sales tax, which helps in determining how much to charge. Your goals are probably different, but math will undoubtedly help in unexpected ways.
The secret to writing is to read. Read books by popular authors, authors from the 1800's and poetry. When you read a particularly powerful passage, stop and analyze how the author used language to create the experience.
