What are some ways to save/earn money while in college?

I have a part-time job and I'm commuting from home to college (so that's helped a lot), but I'm still trying to save for additional costs and even the next year.

Ben’s Answer

One way to save money is to cook all of your meals. Shopping at the grocery is significantly cheaper than eating meals out, and you can also become a good cook. I should probably take my own advice on this one. Also, another good way to make money (which is saving money!) in college is to tutor part time. You can pick a course that you are comfortable in and help someone out who isn't as skilled in that department as you. The hourly rate for tutoring tends to be pretty high. Lastly, it is good to save money on utilities. If you do not need AC, turn it off. If you don't need to be running water, do not run the water. Easy as that.

Richard’s Answer

You can keep your expenses down by living with parents, attending community college which can be free in some cities, then completing your degree at an inexpensive public institution . Debt doesn't have to be out of control. However the typical student does not do everything they can to decrease expenses then has to be stressed during their first years of their career

Matthew’s Answer

Hello Paige,

You stated you are already working a part time job. You may also consider working a part time job on campus, such as at your book store, the cafeteria, the gym or other on campus positions. This would allow you to make some money while you are already on campus. You may also consider looking for an internship. This not only gives you good experience in your major, but some internships are paid so you're making money while you are also learning your craft!

Good luck!

Matthew recommends the following next steps:

Look for work opportunities on campus or a paid internship.

Rachel’s Answer

Remember SOS (save or spend) your money. That is the only thing you do with money so you have the option to save money.

In todays world its easy to give into impulsive purchases. If you want to resist the urge of impulsive and frivolous spending. Make a list of goals you have for your money. This helps me to say no to impulsive purchases I am comparing the idea of shoes to the opportunity to afford a trip to Costa Rica.

Other ideas:

Meal prep/ make your lunch

Make a weekly budget and stick to it

Avoid driving unless its crucial. Organize your errands to one day a week where you can get everything done and spend less time driving.

Hope this helps! :) Best wishes
