There are many ways for high school students to get involved in research but what comes to my mind when I think of research may not be the same as what you hope to get involved in. So I'm wondering about the topics or areas of research you're interested in. My approach to involvement in research may be something you can consider. In my undergraduate psychology class, I volunteered to collaborate with the professor on the final research paper, which was a literature review, and it was a positive experience for me. Having a polished version of the paper published was an icing on the cake. Then, also in my undergraduate years, I identified and contacted a number of investigators at universities in the areas of my interest, and ended up working in the lab of one of the investigators. This was not only one of the most fun and intellectually stimulating experiences I've had, but what I learned from my mentors has been the foundation for my own research projects since.
