What should I be worried about when I get into the BCT trade?

I just got into my first week of JobCorps and I'm going to be shadowing my trade starting tomorrow, is there anything I should be worried about when it comes to the steps in my trade or what should i be prepared for?

Hello, Francisco !

Never approach your career training and education as something to worry about. Your path will only provide positive elements such as knowledge, personal growth and new experiences, so no, there is nothing to worry about.

So I am wondering what BCT stands for and I will have to assume that you mean Building Construction Technology. Am I right on that ? I never like to assume but many of us are not familiar with every abbreviation for every career name. I will try to make this generalized since I am not sure for what path of study you are asking about.

I see by your tags that you have an interest in a career dealing with the Electrical and Manufacturing industries. These are very good industries to learn about at Job Corps. Since Job Corps paths range from eight months to three years, you will pick up lots of information about these careers while there. Depending on how long you will attend Job Corps and how long the BCT program is, you will learn a lot and know exactly what is expected of you in those fields of work. Please do not worry about it. This is your time to become familiar and explore these careers with the professionals that are teaching you. Job Corps is a great program.

It's awesome that you will be shadowing for this. Students do Shadowing when they are not sure if they'd like a particular field of work, so this will give you a chance to observe one day at one company with one worker as to how their job is. It may not be the same way your future job would be, but you can get a more clear idea if you'd like doing that type of work.

Find out from Job Corps staff how the program works. If you decide to opt out of the BCT program, can you switch to something else ? You may want to ascertain that in case you change your mind at any time. Remember that there are always options for both furthering your education for BCT or opting out. Think about what has drawn you to this subject to begin with. It really is a good field to have a career with, so you will probably have nothing to worry about when it is time to apply for work or projects.

With interests in electrical and manufacturing, think about the city or town in which you live and what the potential activity for these careers will be. This is just something to research and think about, not worry about.

Are you worried about something in particular ? If so, feel free to focus a question here about the specific concern you may have. No one can actually tell you how your education or career will be for you, as everyone has different experiences. It will depend on how much you want to do it and what you are willing to do in order to have the career you've chosen. All careers take time, dedication, focus and lots of work and experience.

The best way you're going to find out about it is when you have workshop or lab hours if they assign that at Job Corps. Once you get hands on experience, you will get an idea if this work is for you. You can also watch some videos on You Tube about the career you have in mind and see what people say about it and what their own personal journey was.

Do feel free to return here with any more questions you may have. We are always happy to communicate advice, information and guidance for students during their education and career experiences. Best wishes to you in all you do !

Yes, Don't stick your hands in anything that can pinch, squeeze or rotate. Don't wear loose clothing and don't wear jewelry.

Pay attention to any safety training.

It is a great field but there are hazards that you have to keep mindful off.

That being said, it is perhaps one of the most interesting professions that I have been a part of. You will learn to work on amazing equipment, great pay and usually, steady work.
