As a political science major, would it be hard to have internships that you follow your beliefs?

Hey Payton really great question. I just graduated college and was an International Affairs major and I had numerous internships with the U.S. Government and by no means did I agree with every decision that was made. Most of my colleagues and I shared the same beliefs but there were times where we disagreed with specific decisions; did we let these disagreements affect the quality of our work, absolutely not. There are going to be times in life where you won't always agree with things or policy decisions and that is totally ok.

I was always careful talking about my personal beliefs with coworkers, but there were times where I would share my beliefs with a trusted colleague over coffee. So long as you're not radical in your beliefs, your coworkers will listen and are good people to talk to about these things. Just be careful who you talk to because if you judge the situation incorrectly, it could change the way people see you.

There are plenty of internship opportunities for people who have beliefs all across the political and ethical spectrum. If you are uncomfortable serving in a capacity where the company ethics are different that your own, then research companies that share your values. Though if I can give you some friendly advice, engaging with people who are different than you without yelling or getting upset is a VITAL skill to have. Don't shy away from things because they may be uncomfortable, embrace the challenge.
