Hello, Learner !

I am glad you asked this great question !

No, it is not such an easy prospect to apply to a fashion magazine, or a newspaper with no experience and no published works and write for fashion. It is however, a process and with many considerations, you can obtain a fabulous career, build a great reputation in the professional world.

If what you really want to do is write about fashion, you can do it on a beginner level now, but I recommend getting the exposure, experience and knowledge of the business and industry that can lead to a professional career. Writing about just one topic may not bring in a viable income, but once you start getting your work published, that is a step in the right direction.

What you can do now outside of school is create a fashion blog. You can also create a Pinterest account and post fashion and write copy underneath the pin in your own original way. Writing about fashion takes a lot of research and originality. But before you make a decision about college, you can do these things to familiarize yourself with writing and what fashion is all about, trends and how to write for the industry. Most people who write for the industry are professionals that have a career in something else and the fashion writing is just more like one of their skills. Like I said, it is a process and the career part is something that is built as time goes on.

While in high school, approach the school paper or any video program that could incorporate you as a fashion spokesperson or feature writer with a fashion column. Attend every fashion show that you possibly can in your community. Do a search for what venues are holding fashion shows and attend these to see how things are done. For this particular interest, you will have to begin opportunities for yourself, obtain lots of experiences, networking and published writing, possibly a college degree would be a huge boost and then it would just be a matter of applying for work and waiting to hear back. The more familiar you become with the fashion industry, you will begin to see what steps you will need to take for what you want. It will all become clear to you.

Best wishes on your journey and never give up !

Zoya’s Answer

Getting an internship in fashion journalism can be competitive but achievable with the right approach. The fashion industry is fast-paced and glamorous, drawing many aspiring journalists. Securing an internship often requires a strong portfolio, which could include published writing, blog posts, or personal projects showcasing your voice and understanding of fashion trends. Networking also plays a crucial role—connecting with professionals through social media, attending fashion events, and participating in relevant forums can open doors.

However, many fashion journalism internships are unpaid or offered in major fashion hubs like New York, London, or Paris, which may make them harder to access depending on your location and resources. Having prior experience in writing, social media management, or fashion studies can boost your chances.

While landing an internship might not be easy, persistence and creativity in building your personal brand and portfolio will help set you apart from other candidates.
