How to avoid burnout:

Do the things that allow you to maintain a healthy perspective on life. If you like to run, try to jog regularly to stay healthy. Volunteering can often help to get students out of their study bubble and show them that others have much greater problems than the score on their next test. Many people are heavily involved in church groups and community outreach.

Time management is key. Between lecture, lab and studying, the first 2 years will be grueling. Make sure to leave time for yourself to exercise, eat right and even some socializing.

There will be times during 3rd and 4th year when you will be frustrated by your continued lack of skills and knowledge but just remember that there will be plenty of time to master your specialty during residency.

In order to prevent burnout, it is extremely important to set time aside for yourself! Taking at least an hour during the work can prove extremely beneficial to you! I would also recommend decluttering your workspace of anything that stresses you out! Another helpful tip is keeping a to-do list of all the things you want to accomplish!

I think there aren't any high school classes that can prepare you for medical school. I think challenging yourself in the sciences is a good way to get some exposure to the type classes youll be taking. But, i think overall the best way to prepare yourself for that type of major is to take a lot of challenging classes in high school. Take an extra honors or AP course then you usually would, join an extra club or sport. Taking on these extra commitments will help mirror the commitment this degree takes.

In terms of avoiding burn out, i think the best way is to always dedicate two or so days a week to just relax and not focus on anything school related. For me, it was every friday and saturday i did not touch a school book (I arranged my schedule so no friday classes). Thus, unless i had some sort of rare obligation on a friday, i always relaxed and hung out with friends on those days. If that meant i had to stay up extra late on a thursday in order to do this, then i would. But i feel the time to actually destress and sleep in etc helped make up for that. Also things like yoga and exercise can help relieve the stress that helps play into burnout.
