What are the best schools to study animal medicine? And what did you do after graduating veterinary school?
I’m really interested in all the different schools for veterinarians but what really, are the best schools and how long did it take to become one? Also what did you do after you graduate? Did you start looking for anyone hiring?

Dalilah,
You asked: I’m really interested in all the different schools for veterinarians but what really, are the best schools and how long did it take to become one?
- My daughter is a working Veterinarian who graduated in 2022 from the Kansas State University.
- Your veterinarian journey begins well before college. You should be gathering animal handling and care experience and knowledge in your teens through volunteering opportunities at animal shelters, as well as joining groups like 4H and Future Farmers of America (FFA). These groups provide a lot of good training and experience from seasoned animal professionals.
- To become a veterinarian in the U.S. you need a four year college degree (pre-vet, animal science, or at least biology), then four years of veterinary school.
- The competition for spots in the 32 veterinarian schools is at least as fierce as for medical school. You should expect to be near the top of your graduating class with a GPA approaching 4.0 to stand a chance of getting into the veterinarian school of your choice (have at least 3 choices). You should also have a fair number of years experience with animal-involved organizations
- Your best chance of vet school acceptance is in your state of residence. University of Arizona College of Veterinary Medicine would be your in-state school. This school typically reserves 40%+ slots for in-state residents.
Also what did you do after you graduate?
- My daughter and all her close friends were recruited or immediately accepted by veterinary practices around the U.S.
- Three of my daughter's best friends went into small animal practice, and two others went into mixed practices that include food animals and horses.
Did you start looking for anyone hiring?
- There are multiple organizations that post new-vet opportunities around the country. It is easy to find a veterinarian job in almost any U.S. state, but you must take and pass the licensing test for the state in which you will practice. Anyone who can get through Vet school and pass the national boards test can pass any state licensing test with ease.
