In college I plan to have a part time job, while being in college full time. How do I find time to study at least 15 hours a week?

Lin’s Answer

Try to pick a job where you would have down time to study and located on campus. On campus jobs are great because they allow for flexibility since you do not have to travel far and available for last minute coverage not having to worry about transit time or even mild inclement weather. Jobs where you have downtime allow for study time during work hours. Dorm attendant, gym attendant, library, or dining hall might be a good fit.

Nancy’s Answer

Kinley,

Congratulations on planning to work part time to help pay for college. In my opinion that will help you be more organized. I worked part time during college to earn spending money for pizza and such. If you work more hours than that it just takes good planning. For example, the weekends when there are usually no classes are prime study days. If you study two hours a day during the week between classes and part time work, then four hours a day on the weekends, you’re at your goal.

Here is a tip: the guideline for study is that for every hour spent in class, plan for two to three hours outside of class for study, projects, and papers. That means double to triple the amount of study time you indicated for a typical semester’s load of 15 credit hours. Not everyone needs or spends that much time—it is variable based on professor expectations and the student. However, the same principles apply—use your time wisely. Join a study group. Be wary of making friends who only want to party. You are going places!
