Virginia’s Answer

Hi Mariah!
Congratulations on choosing a career in allied health! Job Corps is a great place to get this type of training. Medical Administrative Assistants play a vital role in the health care profession. You are the "face of the organization" and the "director of first impressions." Customer service skills, empathy, knowledge of electronic health records, insurance requirements, etc. are vital skills. Gaining a national certification in this field will demonstrate your knowledge, understanding, and committment. The National Healthcareer Association provides training materials, national certification exams, certification prep, and a variety of allied health career/certifications, and is the largest allied health certifying agency.

I chose to be on the administrative side of health care as I always enjoyed management and leadership. Being a medical administrative assistant also will provide you with career pathways for you, whether you decide to stay in administrative roll (admin, billing, coding, etc.) or move to a clinical role. I wish you all the success in your studies!

Maddie’s Answer

Hi Mariah!!

I am not a medical administrative assistant but if I were to guess, these are the reasons why people have this as their career:

Maddie recommends the following next steps:

Making a difference in peoples’ lives from a non clinical standpoint
They like to help take charge and like leadership
Differing career options - you can be a MAA with an additional certification such as EHR and/or billing + coding, which in turn can give you more job opportunities and possibly a higher salary rate
Short formal training time can get you into healthcare in a quicker amount of time, being a clinical worker (nurse, doctor, etc.) have many educational obstacles to overcome
