What should I take to college?

I have an addiction to fashion--any new shoes, clothes, accessories, everything! I know I can't bring everything to college, so what are some basic essentials to bring? Maybe an extension cord; of course a mini fridge--what else?

Thank you comment icon Sandals for the showers - communal showers are filled with gross stuff you don't want on your feet. Bring some cleaning supplies and a small, hand-held vacuum. Kailey

This is a great question. I agree with the previous post regarding lifting your bed if you can. Regarding clothes bring items you can mix and match well to create multiple different looks. Also depending on where you are going to school, bring outfits that can be layered for the weather. If you are planning to go back home for winter break, one option is pack for the 1st few months and then you can take back outfits and swap out for the new season or new looks. The other fashion essential I recommend is one of those inexpensive full length mirrors. You can get them also at Bed Bath and Beyond and put it either in the closet or up against the wall so you don't have to go to the bathroom (which may not have a full length mirror). Have fun and best of luck to you!

Oh wow, I distinctly remember this experience, good luck! Do you know the size of your dorm room? That will be helpful in informing your decisions.

The basics, extension cord, fridge, microwave are well listed on sites like Bed, Bath & Beyond or most college prep websites. I'm going to address your <3 for fashion.

A trick that I have heard of, but have not yet used, is simple. First, in your closet now turn all your hangers backward, then each time you wear an item, turn it back the "correct" way. This will help you understand exactly what you're wearing the most. Alternatively, you could take an OOTD picture and analyze each week or month to determine your true staples, both in clothing and accessories.

I've done this size down a few times and lots of the decisions have come down to climate, culture, and current trends. My style is moderately well developed for myself, but lucky you are probably still exploring and being more adventurous! Most accessories are smaller than clothing and can be hung or displayed in creative ways that don't take up much room, even in a dorm.

Other pertinent questions, do you plan to join a sorority or an organization in which you'll need formal clothes? Have you learned how to do your laundry? What is the laundry situation in your potential dorm?

Have you seen the ladders on which you can hang scarves? Or the pegs on which necklaces are perfectly displayed? For earrings and rings I bought small ceramic dishes at Anthropologie (they were $5!) for the different sizes and made sure each one had a match. Also, if youloft or lift your bed (Bed Bath & Beyond lifts for $10) I also bought sweater boxes (approx $20 each) to roll under the bed. This is what I do for my 600 square foot apartment, bigger than your dorm, but it helps.

Have so much fun in college, I hope this is helpful!

ellyn recommends the following next steps:

check out college prep website sheets
learn the size of your dorm
start making a catalog of your fashion choices
find the space saving accessory displays and containers

Things you need to take to college - school supplies - in a modern age, that is battery packs and extension cords. Other things i found very useful, lots of foods you can prepare quickly or bring as snacks. a portable travel mug for coffee. Change for parking meters. Be prepared to spend all day on campus. Think about a one day survival pack.
