Can you combine Botany and Medicine?

I am a senior in high school and was curious to know if a career existed that combined medicine and botany? I am very interested in both and am wondering to what certain extent do they "mix". #medicine #biology #botany

Hi Darlyn! There are different types of plants and herbs that are being used in the synthesis of useful drugs to treat various diseases. You can talk to your career councilor. Biochemistry and Botany are the two fields in which you can study the medicinal properties of plants and can do your research in this field.
Best of luck!

Hello Darlyn!

It's really exciting to hear about your unique interest in merging botany and medicine - it's truly a captivating blend! Indeed, there's a clear overlap between these two fields. Countless medications and treatments have their roots in plants, and this intriguing study is known as ethnobotany or pharmacognosy. If you decide to chase a career in this area, you might find yourself diving deep into biology, chemistry, and botany during your college years, and then moving on to specialized research or training in the world of herbal medicine.

You could also consider careers in herbal medicine, pharmaceutical research, or even the emerging field of environmental medicine. These career paths offer a thrilling mix of botany and medical sciences, perfectly aligning with your passion for both medicine and botany.

There is quite a bit of research going on with the medical properties of the compounds of plants. There are many things that are unknown about plants even though people have been using them in medicine for thousands of years, so there is a lot that we can still learn!
