Andrew’s Answer

Sounds like you are passionate about two general areas, health (nutrition) and photography (film?). Either way my suggestion is to pursue a college degree where you can combine and expand your interests. Perhaps pursue a film or journalism major with a minor in nutrition and health. Or major in nutrition and health with a minor in journalism. As you progress towards your degree you should be able to shift in either direction as you gain experience and decide what you are most passionate about pursuing.

Andrew recommends the following next steps:

Look in to schools that offer both majors and allow for flexibility and creativity with respect to courses and experiences.

Steve’s Answer

Absolutely adore your enthusiasm! I recommend a two-step approach to your learning journey. Start by focusing on health, nutrition, and wellness. It would be beneficial for you to seek out educational materials that shed light on the current situation of America's food and nutrition dilemma. I personally gain a lot of insight from listening to numerous podcasts and reading a variety of books from reliable sources - they don't always adhere to the guidelines set by major food and pharmaceutical companies. A significant part of this involves using common sense, scrutinizing food labels, and ensuring that people are consuming food in a healthy and clean way. If you come across the food pyramid that was taught by the government years ago, steer clear of it.

Once you have a solid foundation and some experience in this field, proceed to the second step: learn about documentary filmmaking. Immerse yourself in a range of documentaries on food and nutrition. However, avoid getting trapped in a single dietary perspective like ONLY CARNIVORE, ONLY VEGAN, or ONLY KETO. Formulate your own stance on what you want to educate people about and pursue it. Acquire skills on how to conduct interviews, how to weave engaging stories, and how to produce films on topics that genuinely interest you.

Wishing you the best of luck.

Mary Patrice’s Answer

Hi, Ebitari! It’s great to hear about your passions. Since you love creating, directing, editing, and photography, you might want to consider specific courses like Film Production, Digital Media, or Photography. You might also want to give CapCut a try. It's a free and reliable software that I personally use. For a more professional experience, consider programs that provide hands-on training with cameras and advanced editing software like Adobe Premiere Pro or Final Cut Pro, along with courses in storytelling and screenwriting.

For the health and nutrition aspect, consider enrolling in courses like Nutrition Science or Health Promotion. Programs that include classes in Public Health, Nutritional Counseling, or Community Health can be incredibly beneficial.

If you're interested in merging both worlds, look for programs that offer Health Communication or Media for Health Promotion. These might include courses in health marketing, media production, and public speaking.

Additionally, you might want to check out workshops or certifications in areas like digital marketing or content creation to enhance your skills further. Internships or volunteer positions in health organizations or media companies can provide invaluable real-world experience and help you narrow down your interests. Exploring these options will give you a solid foundation to build your career. Good luck on your journey!

David’s Answer

Hey Ebitari,
I like to suggest getting a college education. That will give great options for what you want to accomplish. College will broaden your horizons. And, if you chose to be a creative, you will need a job as you build your business. The health interests will require some form of education. To get into film making, you will want to consider a degree in the arts. There are schools that offer film making and related courses. Use Google to explore your options. Possibly, your school counselor could be helpful.
If you pursue the arts, it has to be your passion above all else.
Best of luck! Enjoy the journey.

Kevin P’s Answer

Ebitari, when confronted with conflicts like this I always think there are a couple different ways you can look at it. Could you combine your passions to be very niched, could you have two separate sources of income, or is one best left as a hobby?

In this case let’s say it’s photography and nutrition.

Combining the two - food photography comes to mind. You may not always be able to pick the foods you capture but you could niche yourself a little more into health foods. I’ve had some friends in food photography and let me say, it’s not easy. So it’s truly an art. But it’s an option.

Two sources of income - pick one to be your career and the other to be your side hustle. Photography tends to offer more flexibility. You can do weddings for example, birthday parties, intimate shoots all of these are normally outside of normal business hours. That would work great while you work a 9-5 as a nutritionist.

Keeping one a hobby - not to pick on photography but artistic ventures are typically most enjoyed when you have 100% autonomy over your passion. So you can work as a nutritionist and then capture anything you’d like. You can start an instagram for your art and then see how your page grows. You never know where that will lead.

Those are just my two cents. Hope it helps. Best of luck.

Annaleigh’s Answer

Hi Ebitari!
In my experience working in a creative field, people have majors of all different kinds! I worked on film and photo sets with a lot of people in college who were majoring in things like accounting, nutrition, or business! I think that if you have a passion for a job that will be fulfilling and support your life, you should do that! Photo and editing can be an amazing hobby or side gig, but it can be really hard to make it your full time career! I would say try to make both happen :)
