What's Up Dezshana!

I was a Security Officer then promoted to Supervisor for 3 years back in 2019. To give better context, it's good to know first the difference between a security officer and a security guard, yet are similar. To answer your question, security guards duties are fairly simple; for the most part, security guards' main role is to ensure valid verification from people accessing the site you are posted. Examples of places where security guards operate: jail/prison facilities, private corporations, school campuses, gated properties, parking garages, industrial facilities. Think security guards are like your firewall on your computer, making sure malicious software doesn't enter into your system.

A security officer's have more flexible duties than a security guard, since a security guard's duties are usually stationary throughout their shift. Security officers main role is to act as a visual deterrence, performing routine patrols throughout the property, as well as ensuring public safety and depending on the property, sometimes providing service to the public like, providing directory information for visitors, medical assistance (if your are first aid, AED/CPR certified), providing request escorts for tenants, and sometimes responding to alarms, maintenance issues, writing incident reports, etc.

Overall, the main thing to keep in mind whether you are a guard or officer, safety is number one priority. Also, if you are pursuing security in hopes to transition into law enforcement, remember that in security, it's "Observe and Report", not "Protect and Serve". I've seen many people make the rookie mistake thinking that security is the same as being a cop, THAT's not ALWAYS TRUE. I hope this information helps in your endevours. Good Luck!

Hey, Dezshana. I’m glad you asked! I have a family friend who's like an uncle to me, and he loves sharing his experiences. Security guards do so much more than just patrol and check IDs. He tells me how he also helps train new guards and handles reports on any incidents that occur. They keep an eye on security cameras to spot any suspicious activity, like someone hanging around where they shouldn’t be. During events, they assist with crowd control to ensure everything runs smoothly and securely. They also conduct safety checks to identify and report any hazards, contributing to a safer environment for everyone. It’s a job that really keeps you alert and makes a difference in people’s lives.

Hey Dezshana!

Great question! Being a security has a lot of responsibility I was in the security industry for 11yrs so what advice I can give you is they handle a lot with customers, responding to alarms, de-escalating situations, writing reports, making sure anyone who is coming into the site is authorized to be there, checking ID's and some sites may require you to check bags etc. You really have to be alert and observant because nobody will know that site better than you and you're the face of any company you choose to go with, you're not only representing yourself but also the company as well. There's a lot more security guards do then just welcoming people to the site they will look towards you if an incident becomes dangerous they will rely on you to get them out of danger or whatever the case may be.
