What companies are good to work for in the video game industry?

I am interested in the video game industry because I like video games and plan to go into computer science. However, although I know how to design a basic game by myself, I don't really know how to follow a career path in the industry. What companies are good to work for, and how would one go about applying to work for them? #video-games

I agree with the others. Best start is to probably go for companies that make the games that you love playing. Having that love for the company will be good motivation already. You can also try looking for start-ups or indies to gain experience before transitioning to those bigger ones. Some companies that are on top of my list:

1. Nintendo
2. Xbox
3. Capcom

Ed’s Answer

This entirely depends on what games you like playing. The games industry is full of passionate individuals and it's more difficult (but not impossible) to work in a company where you're not as engaged with the end product. I'd advise looking at who makes your favourite games, get on LinkedIn and start trying to contact people that work there.

Another practicality to consider is your location - if you're able to relocate, great, but cities like New York aren't great for games companies as there's not many.

Ed recommends the following next steps:

Set up a LinkedIn profile if you haven't already, make sure it looks professional
Search for people who do the job you want to do in the company you want to work at and connect with / message them
Keep your message concise and direct - try to stick to one or two questions, the easier your message is to answer the higher the chance of getting a reply is
