Hassan’s Answer

As with most business, you'd want to work in one to gain experience and save $s for startup costs.

https://www.pioneerrx.com/how-to-open-a-pharmacy outlines what it takes and the costs to start a pharmacy which they estimated ~$400,000-600,000.

https://ohiopharmacists.org/aws/OPA/asset_manager/get_file/71305?ver=13048 also has detail from a 2015 seminar on the subject.

Hello, I would suggest working for a pharmacy first. Look at how each different type of pharmacy works, then compare and contrast what you would like to do. There’s retail, long term care, short term care, warehouse, fusion, nuclear, and compounding. If you like to interact with people; I suggest retail, hospitals and term care facilities. You can open a pharmacy as a tech, or pharmacist (even as a tech you will need a pharmacist).

Anthony’s Answer

If you're early in your career you absolutely should work at a pharmacy. The knowledge you obtain will help tremendously if your goal is to open your own.

Yolanda’s Answer

I would NOT open a pharmacy because even the big chains are struggling to make ends meet. The pharmacy industry has changed so much and pharmacies are not able to make much of a profit because the Pharmacy Benefit Managers are making all the profit. So, to save yourself the headache and just work for a pharmacy. To be honest, I would not go into pharmacy at this point in time because it is so vilatile. I just found out yesterday that a friend of mine is clsoing his independent pharmacy because the pharmacy industry has changed so much and he couldn't make a profit. I would look into becoming a Physician Assistant or a Nurse Practitioner or something in mental health. There is such a need for more mental health practitioners. I hope this helps and that you see that there are options out there for you. Please let me know if you if have any other questions and good luck with your future!!
