how much do medical assistants make in a year?

I love welding but I would also like to help people with their needs, So if I could I would do welding as a side job and Medical assistant as my main job. I like helping people but I feel like the big doctor things aren't my thing so an assistant would fit better for me

Doc’s Answer

While their job titles may sound similar, Medical Administrative Assistants and Medical Assistants are completely different roles in the healthcare industry. The primary difference between a Medical Assistant and a Medical Administrative Assistant is that Medical Assistants play a more direct role in patient care.
• MEDICAL ASSISTANTS carry out various clinical tasks such as measuring vital signs, taking blood pressure, drawing blood and administering pregnancy tests. They can assist the doctor during patient exams, or they may take notes. Medical assistants also have a variety of administrative responsibilities such as answering phone calls, greeting patients when they first come into a clinic and gathering patient information, such as billing and contact information.
• MEDICAL ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANTS mostly play a administrative role in a healthcare organization. For this reason, they can also be known as medical secretaries or medical office assistants. They handle bookkeeping tasks and act as a liaison between medical staff and the patient, making sure that patient records are up to date, appointments are scheduled and more. They also often manage the front desk of the organization and are responsible for ensuring that patients have a positive and smooth experience when they arrive for appointments.

Brooke’s Answer

If you love welding, and this is your passion, that may be a better position for you. As someone else mentioned, Medical Assistant jobs cap out on salary quite low, and the benefits and time off may not be the best for a long term career. If there are welding unions or trade associations in your area, that may have a better financial payoff. You can always volunteer to help people more directly without making it your career.
