How will I know what to specialize in?

I am currently enrolled in a Forensic Sciences degree program. Towards the completion of my degree I will be required to choose a certain area, but there are dozens and they are all fascinating. Forensic Toxicology, Trace evidence analysis, DNA analysis, Digital Forensics, Criminalistics.... the list goes on. I am appealing to the people who have already had to make decisions like this one-how will I be able to choose?

Maleah’s Answer

Hi Bethany! I recently graduated with a degree in Cognitive & Linguistic Sciences, and was required to choose an area to concentrate in as well. When making my decision I was unfamiliar with the field of study, so I chose to take as many courses from different concentrations as my schedule would allow. While taking these courses, I would continuously ask myself if these were topics I was genuinely interested in, if I was understanding these topics, and if any topic was standing out among the others.

My advice would be to conduct some research on what career tracks these specializations may offer, but to also consider what topics you genuinely enjoy learning about.
