Hey,

I think it's great that you are already thinking so early on your career plans. Speaking as someone who graduated with a degree in Sociology and now working in the banking you will have limitless options available for you if you continue to expand on your goals. Some things to think about...

1) You mentioned that you would like to travel the world. Many colleges have study abroad programs that allow you to travel to a different country between 1 month- 1 year (depending on the program) and you're able to indulge yourself in studies while visiting a country that is diverse and new to you. This experience will open your eyes and can be very life changing. I know that it is not cheap to do this however, many colleges do give out scholarships/grants to students who maintain a good gpa and also express interest in this program (the earlier the possible). When you get to college this should be something you look for in a University/School when applying to see if they have that option. Also make sure to express this during your first visit with an advisor so they can help set up a career plan for you.

2) It's great that you already have an business mindest but this would be a great time now to start expanding on your idea of being your own boss. What do you enjoy doing/what's your niche/what kind of business would you like to run? The earlier you start answering these questions the better. Set up a business plan now and continue over the years to develop it. Save money now and if it's feasible try developing a business now or while you're in college (you have to start somewhere). Have you ever watched the television show Shark Tank? If not that will give you an idea on a business like mindset that you should have.

3) I graduated with a degree in Sociology and I plan on maybe one day getting my Masters in Social Work. However, I would suggest that you take some Sociology classes to see how much you really like it.

4) Lastly, keep the mindset that you have! You're still so young and you're going to have many options available for you just continue to keep working hard. I wish you the best!

I would maybe consider going for Sociology. You can do a lot as a social worker. Social workers do so much for their communities, and you aren't limited to working only for agencies, with a Soc. major you can open up your own business. I would definitely consider doing more research on the field to see if that may be something you are interested in. Photography is great, and it could be a very sucessful path but it is also a very saturated path. I am not downing it in any way, cause like I said it could be very successful. You do already have a great head on your shoulders to think about future business endeavors. Keep up the good work

Hello Esperanza!

You still have time to device what you want to major in! Don't stress. It sounds like you have a head start in knowing what you want to do with your life. Keep in mind that a small percentage of people actually end up with a career closely related to their college major! Check out this article in the Washington Post. http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/wonkblog/wp/2013/05/20/only-27-percent-of-college-grads-have-a-job-related-to-their-major/ However, given the information you provided about what you want to do I would recommend checking out photojournalism. You can of course study other things than your specific major. Most universities have a basic core requirement (kind of like high school.) You will take classes like writing, math, history and even sociology. Then there are electives and major specific courses. From here I would recommend looking at many majors as you make your way to college! Then, you can talk to an admissions counselor, and eventually and academic adviser. They can further help you with your goals and help you decide a career path.

Best of luck!
Samantha
