How many years does it take to become an orthodontist?

I really want to be an orthodontics but i am not so willing if it takes such a long while in school in order to become one officially.

Jody’s Answer

I can take in between 10 to 11 yrs, you have to major in biology or chemistry in undergraduate school it should take about 4 years to get your bachelors degree if you do good and keep your gpa up because it is very hard to get into dental school without meeting the qualifying gpa. You will then take another 4 years in grad school (dental school) and then another 2-3 years in dentistry specialties. It sound like a long time but it is well worth it because time will fly and you will make close to $200,000 a year and if you look into owning you own practice you can make even more I would say half a million a year if your good at what you do. So go for it! Don't hold back if this is what you aspire to do make it happen because once the time and years are gone and wasted you cant get it back.

Thank you comment icon Hi, Jody! Thank you for the answer above! I was wondering if you could expand on your knowledge a bit more, since I am also looking into graduate school. 1.) You mentioned that the 10-11 years of schooling for orthodontics is broken up into stages - what do students do during each of these level of education? 2.) What was your experience like in college, especially when it comes to the idea of "burnout" after you've been in school for a few years? 3.) What next steps would you recommend to Kiara and I to prepare for college and even graduate school? Thank you in advance! Alexandra, Admin

Richard’s Answer

4 years college + 4 years dental school + 2 or 3 years of orthodontic school

That's a lot of years in schools! It's okay, most of the time, it's quite fun.
