Alex’s Answer

Great question! I can't answer this exactly because it is dependent on the person. What I can help with is WHAT you should be thinking about when you make that decision. Here are two important things to consider.

1. Salaries: Salaries differ WILDLY from state-to-state. Where you teach matters a lot when it comes to making money. But it's not just income, it's also cost of living. Teaching is not a high paying job, but it can be a good paying job -- do your research

2. Policies: State policies will impact what you teach and how you can teach it. If you have progressive values and beliefs, for example, it may be difficult for you to teach in a 'red state' due to your ideologies. Which is totally fine BTW, you should teach wherever you are comfortable

Hope this helps!

Karin’s Answer

You will want to look at states that have higher teacher salaries, and, more importantly, have a strong union presence. A strong teachers' union means that teachers feel protected, which means they focus more on their actual jobs.

States where it is better to be a teacher are usually the states that rank highest in educational achievements nationwide. New Jersey and Massachusetts are two states that consistently rank in the top five in all of the above.
