Paul’s Answer

Just get started! TODAY!

The great thing about an artist career, is that no one is stopping you! You can start singing literally today - at open mics, karaoke, friends parties, church - anywhere someone will take you. And there's no such thing as bad experience. ANY experience performing is experience you'll use throughout your career. Plenty of people starting in church choir, or in a local band, or in high school chorus line.

Beyond that, everyone else who's answered has great advice. Build your talent, take lessons, expand your repertoire.

Good luck!

Before starting anything else and approaching audience online or offline, the first thing you should do as a singer is to start practicing every day and most importantly start listening to your practices. Once you understand what notes suit to your voice, you will be able to sing confidently in every situation.

Gabrielle’s Answer

Starting a singing career involves a combination of skill development, networking, and self-promotion. Here’s a step-by-step guide for the first things someone should do to begin their journey into the world of singing:

### 1. **Develop Your Voice**
- **Voice Training**: Invest time in vocal training, either through self-study or by working with a vocal coach. This will help you understand proper breathing techniques, pitch control, and range expansion.
- **Practice Regularly**: Make a habit of practicing daily. Even just 15-30 minutes a day can significantly improve your voice over time.
- **Learn Music Theory**: Understanding basic music theory (like scales and harmonies) can help you with pitch accuracy and singing in different keys.

### 2. **Find Your Style and Genre**
- Explore different music genres to find what suits your voice and resonates with you. Whether it's pop, R&B, jazz, or classical, finding your niche will make it easier to establish yourself.
- Sing songs from various genres to discover what makes your voice stand out and where you feel most comfortable.

### 3. **Record Yourself and Build a Repertoire**
- **Record Demos**: Start by recording yourself singing cover songs or your original songs. Use your phone or a basic microphone to record and assess your performance.
- **Build a Repertoire**: Compile a list of songs that you can perform confidently. This will be useful when opportunities arise to perform live or record more professional demos.

### 4. **Create an Online Presence**
- **Social Media Accounts**: Create profiles on platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube to share short clips of your singing. Platforms like TikTok are great for reaching new audiences quickly.
- **Post Regular Content**: Share singing covers, vocal exercises, or even behind-the-scenes content about your practice routine. Consistency helps build an audience.

### 5. **Network and Collaborate**
- **Connect with Other Musicians**: Join online music communities or local music groups to connect with other aspiring musicians. Collaboration can lead to new opportunities.
- **Attend Open Mics and Music Events**: Local open mic nights or music festivals are great places to meet fellow musicians and potential fans.

### 6. **Write or Find Original Music**
- Writing your own songs can help you stand out and show your unique artistic perspective. Start with simple lyrics and melodies.
- If you’re not a songwriter, you can collaborate with writers or look for producers who can help you create custom tracks.

### 7. **Learn Basic Music Production**
- Being able to produce or edit your recordings is a valuable skill in the early stages. This doesn’t require professional-grade software—there are free tools like GarageBand (for Mac users) or Audacity (for Windows).
- Learning to mix your vocals can help you create higher-quality recordings to share online.

### Summary:
- **First Step**: Focus on developing your voice through regular practice and training.
- **Next**: Create an online presence and connect with other musicians for exposure and growth.
- **Gradually**: Work towards recording your music professionally and performing in front of live audiences.

Starting a singing career can be daunting, but breaking it down into these steps can make the process more manageable and enjoyable!

Sing wherever you can for an audience. Be yourself with your unique style. If you can accompany yourself that’s great but if not try to find someone who will back you up.
