If you're specifically looking to hone your cyber-security skills, I recommend "war games" sites such as overthewire.org. These sites allow you to slowly mature your security skills and learn how to pick up new ones

Home Lab. Start with a Raspberry Pi with different operating systems and languages.  Expand from one Pi to multiple Pi's, used laptops, IoT devices.  Write a tool to solve a problem, then rewrite it in another language.
