Hello! My original plan was to become a veterinarian. So I started at a State 2 year degree with every intention of transferring to Cornell. I ended up with a degree in Agriculture Science, and transferred to the University of Maine at Orono. I graduated with a BS in Animal science. My first job was a Dairy milk tester, where I worked on numerous farms collecting data on the dairy cows and putting it into a easy to use guide for the farmers on the herds health, milk output and breeding history. This was before computers came on to the scene. I married a dairy farmer and helped manage the farm and animals. When the price of milk dropped, I went on to become a registered nurse. There are a wide variety of jobs in Agriculture. Hands on would be managing or running a farm/ranch and you would start out as a hired hand or herdsman to learn how to run a business. Or if you like genetics and want to be hands on you can become an AI technician and breed animals. Do you like large animal or small animals? Many positions do not require a college education. There is agronomy which is plant science, soil science, raising calves for a dairy or for meat, or raising chickens, goats sheep for meat Some jobs are hard labor, other require knowledge of nutrition, genetics and science. Or you can become a teacher? or work in the government. Try to figure out your interest and start there. Have fun and enjoy!
