Working in healthcare is rewarding because you get to make a real difference in people's lives. Whether you’re helping patients recover or supporting them through difficult times, there's a deep sense of fulfillment in knowing you're contributing to their well-being. For someone passionate about helping others, this can be especially meaningful.
Healthcare also offers job stability and the chance to explore different roles. You can grow in various specialties, and there's always something new to learn as medicine evolves. That makes it an exciting and ever-changing field to be part of.
Women of color face particular challenges in healthcare. There can be systemic inequalities, discrimination, and a lack of representation in leadership roles. These barriers can make it harder to advance or feel fully supported. Despite this, many women of color are leading efforts to create more inclusive environments, helping to change the culture for future generations.

Dear Lashay,
I've been a part of the healthcare industry for three decades now. Jobs in this sector can be incredibly fulfilling, as they offer the opportunity to positively impact someone's life. However, it's not always smooth sailing. Patients can sometimes pose challenges due to their personal biases, which they may express while you're attending to them. Historically, healthcare systems haven't always provided adequate support to their employees in such instances.
But the winds of change are blowing. Recently, our healthcare system has started to enforce a code of conduct, which is now handed out to patients as well as staff members. This is a significant step towards creating a more supportive and respectful environment.
As Abbi pointed out, there's another hurdle that you might face within the hospital system - the feeling of being underrepresented in leadership positions. However, this scenario is gradually changing. More and more women of color are stepping into the medical field and earning advanced degrees. This trend is bound to bring about a positive change in the future.
The medical field needs more women of color, and I sincerely hope you will consider being one of them!
