I'll answer this question based on my professional experience. Although some departments may have different requirements, I believe most will follow this path.
Becoming a SWAT member is a process that begins with first becoming a police officer. To be considered for SWAT, you need several years experience as a patrol officer.
Requirements needed for SWAT are several. If you have military experience, especially in infantry or special ops, you are a more sought-after applicant. Even with military experience, you need to be referred by your supervisor for the team.
As SWAT is a highly physical and stressful position, you must be physically fit. Weight training and cardio is a must. The gear and equipment carried can be quite heavy, and the activities required by SWAT members can be demanding. Passing a physical agility test may be required to be considered for the team.
In addition to being physically fit, you need to be tactically intelligent, and able to think and react in high stress situations. To help evaluate your abilities, you may be required to go in front of a panel interview. You will be asked questions, including being required to answer various scenarios.
Lastly, you will be required to qualify with various firearms. As SWAT stands for Special Weapons And Tactics, it clearly is necessary for each member be proficient with the guns used by the team.
