What are some possible career paths for engineering majors?

I am currently a high school senior that was directly admitted into the College of Engineering at the University of Washington. I am simply curious to see what jobs are out there for my type of major.

Peter’s Answer

Melissa:

Congratulations on admittance to the University of Washington. This is my Alma Mater, also, It is one of the great universities in this Country. There hundreds of career path across the Engineering career spectrum. During your first two years, you will have the opportunity to take introductory classes in a number of different engineering disciplines: civil, electrical mechanical, etc. Hopefully at least one of these disciplines will especially appeal to you for a possible career. At that point you can look in-depth at career paths. You can start by contacting the engineering department of interest. They will have considerable information on careers and can put you in contact with professionals in that engineering field.

Perhaps you'll find my Field, Civil Engineering, attractive. Good, old More Hall has a lot of history and stands ready to receive you!

Good Luck, Pete Sturtevant, PE

Simon’s Answer

Peter gave you some good advice. It’s good that you have selected engineer as career. As Peter stated you need to see which branch of engineering excites you.... electrical, civil, mechanical etc. councilors and clubs at school can assist here. Once you get out of school, keep your mind open as to where you want to work. One big decision is; do you want to work for a specific company, or at an engineering firm supplying engineering to multiple companies. If you like travel, pick a national of international company. If you prefer to minimize travel stick with a small, local company. Your first assignments will help develop your planning, design and execution steps required To be an effective engineer. You will then be assigned more complicated projects with greater responsibilities. Some engineers like the management side and some prefer to provide engineering services and specialize in certain technologies/fields. The bottom line is that the engineering career paths are endless. Keep an open mind and persue the path that appeals to you. Work hard at being a good, cost effective engineer and you will have endless opportunities. Good luck.

Simon recommends the following next steps:

Look into the various engineering specialties and fields.
Look into engineering societies and clubs.
Keep an ear open about companies, and see what companies appeal to you.

G. Mark’s Answer

One of the things you'll find about engineering is that it focuses on doing. There are many fields where your output is judged subjectively, primarily. Engineering is more objective. This makes it especially rewarding. An engineer has to be a scientist, but really good engineers are also artists. An engineer is a problem-solver. You can look at job postings and see a lot of positions for all kinds of engineers -- mechanical, electrical, computer, automotive, aeronautic, and on and on. But the message is that you need not limit yourself to titles with "engineer" in the name -- the skills and knowledge you'll gain in an engineering curriculum can be applied to quite a range. I should also mention that engineers -- good engineers -- must be good communicators.
