Hi there, you will learn everything you need to know on practices and methods during your time in graduate school when you pursue a Master’s in Speech Pathology.
During your undergraduate program, you learn about the big 7 in terms of the speech therapy scope and will spend some time shadowing your clinicians and peers. During your graduate program, you will typically spend the first year in class and in the field, such as a clinic, school, or private practice, learning the “how-to”s and then you will typically spend the second year of grad school practicing with patients. Not all programs follow the exact same course however, you will learn what you need to be successful.
In addition to that, not every patient is the same. Some methods and forms of therapy work better for some and not others. When you build your clientele, especially with children, their behaviors are dependent on themselves and you will come to find what works best for each child. There is no cure-all when it comes to speech disorders and delays, you will need to curate individualized plans for each patient. This will eventually get easier with experience you gain in the field.
Hope this helps provide some clarity!
