Time management is key. Between lecture, lab and studying, the first 2 years will be grueling. Make sure to leave time for yourself to exercise, eat right and even some socializing.
There will be times during 3rd and 4th year when you will be frustrated by your continued lack of skills and knowledge but just remember that there will be plenty of time to master your specialty during residency.

Be prepared to stay healthy both mentally and physically during the 4 years of medical school. There are times when you will feel down or defeated due to the extreme volume of knowledge you need to absorb very quickly. This is normal. Be kind to yourself. Seek help from your advisor (most medical schools will assign a faculty member to you or you may choose someone) if you feel you are in a dark place. Never be afraid to ask for help. There will also be periods of sleep deprivation. This is also part of the rigors of the world of medicine. Get good quality sleep whenever you can. Even though you are constantly in a time crunch it is very important to make time to exercise regularly. Many schools have gyms. I took classes at a local dance studio. Seek out a group of friends in your class for social support. It is important to make time to have fun with friends and to support each other. I found most of my medical school training to be exciting and I feel it was one of the best times of my life.

I completely agree with Joanne! The only other thing that I would add, is to learn now what works for you as a student. How do you best study? What is most effective for you? Keep in mind that this might be something completely different than your fellow students. But knowing this going into medical school will help you be ready to hit the ground running.
