When is the best time to change my major?

I am planning on majoring in journalism at the university I will be attending in the fall, however I am having second thoughts on my choice. I am considering changing my major but I want to at least give journalism a try before doing so. If I eventually decide on changing majors, what year of college would it be best to do so?

Thank you comment icon When it comes to changing majors (especially if the new major is drastically different from your current one), then the earlier the better! Freshman and sophomore years would probably be the best, since those are the years where you're taking a variety of classes and trying to figure out what you want to do. Absolutely give journalism a shot, but if you're unsure then I would take other classes of interest as well to help you decide. You want to decide as soon as possible because you don't want to lose out on all of your progress/be stuck paying for school way longer than you have to! Sydney x

You should be able to take classes that aren't for your major as early as your first semester! Definitely take some time to explore other majors that you have some interest in. As a rule of thumb, most colleges require students to declare a major by the end of the sophomore year (second year), so you have until then to really decide. It's a good idea to get ahead on the requirements earlier than later though.

Most colleges and universities have prerequisites, which are classes you need to take to obtain your degree. You will typically take these classes during your freshman and sophomore year. You don't have to declare your major as soon as you enter college and can remain undecided. I didn't officially declare my major until the beginning of my junior year. And even if you decide to change your major, you might have enough credits for it to be your minor.
