What are the best characteristics for a beginning teacher to have in order to succeed?

I am a high school senior who has struggled with deciding what to do in my next phase of life. I'm hoping to become a teacher after being told multiple times that I could make a good teacher but I honestly don't know what that means. #fall24

Hi Adison,

I love that you are already asking these questions at your age- you will make a great teacher/professional when the time comes. I would say some characteristics the best teachers have are;
-Adaptability: Lesson plans rarely go exactly as expected. Adapting to the needs of students and unforeseen challenges is critical.

-Patience: Students learn at different paces and come with varying needs and behaviors. Patience will ensure you're supportive and encouraging.

-Organizational Skills: Managing lesson plans, student records, and classroom activities requires a high level of organization.

-Empathy: Understanding students’ unique backgrounds and struggles builds trust and improves engagement.

-Growth Mindset: A growth mindset allows you to view challenges as opportunities to improve and model perseverance for students.

Teaching is a tough, but incredibly rewarding career. Your future students will be so fortunate to have you. Best of luck! :)

Hello Adison,

It's wonderful to know that you're contemplating a career in teaching! We're always in need of exceptional and enthusiastic teachers, and it's an incredibly fulfilling profession!

There are numerous qualities that pave the way for a successful teaching career. Initially, completing the necessary training and gaining practical experience in a classroom setting, under the guidance of mentor teachers and as a student teacher, are fundamental to your success! The majority of states offer comprehensive teacher training and certification programs that equip you with techniques to establish a conducive learning environment for your students, effective teaching methods, and strategies for classroom management.

As for personal traits, being an excellent listener, empathetic, flexible, innovative, and highly organized will significantly benefit you. I've come across an article that delves deeper into the essential qualities for teachers, which you might find insightful.

The best answer for characteristics needed for a new teacher is the same for being a seasoned teacher, know what you are teaching and more importantly I believe is never take yourself too seriously. Teaching should be fun, and you should be willing to learn as well.
